Totally OT: Remember Notre Dame

As a collector of beautiful art objects (coins), I’m just sick seeing the destruction in Paris. Just posting this for others to keep this place in your thoughts (and prayers, if you are inclined).
Thank you all.

Really saddened and already started a Go Fund Me for the Hunchback
Been watching the BBC live feed from work. Fortunately no reports of people hurt or missing.

True...thankfully no loss of life.
But I keep thinking of the spectacular Rose windows...not to mention the rest of the building. Just terrible.
A sad day for the entire world. Construction began in 1163 and completed in 1345. Took 182 years to construct, destroyed in 1 day.
I have been watching the news for two hr's and devastated. For lack of a better word.:(
Very sad.
Very sad. Luckily some of the statues were removed as part of the renovation, and thus spared. The loss though, is great.
Anybody here have one of these? Sad day for the world...right before Easter too.
Hopefully the exterior stone walls will remain standing and will permit rebuilding...but if those famous buttresses give way tonight...
I just learned of this. I'm horrified. Completely shocked. Stunned.
This is one of my favorite places in all the world. I've climbed her towers many times. I only hope there will be enough left to rebuild. What an iconic treasure.
I built this as a history project

I feel like crying 😭😭😭😭
I sure hope it was an accident or act of nature. With all that's been going on in France one has to wonder.
A huge loss for Paris, France, and the world.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Yes...by all accounts, it was likely carelessness involving roof repairs.
Also...some breaking good news...the Paris Police day the massive bell towers have been saved...and the stone walls will likely remain standing. So some good news on an awful day.
A very sad day.
Not my coin.
Later, Paul.
A sad day indeed. Good luck to the people of France!!!!

Old building built to withstand the centuries. It will return and be better than ever.
I did, And a broken heart.:(
I've never been to France without visiting Notre Dame de Paris at least once on each trip.
The Catholic Church still owns Notre Dame de Paris and it is my understanding that the French State has been reluctant to provide funds for maintenance and restoration until after former Catholic churches have been turned over to the State. Being the greatest Church in France, the Catholic Church itself has had to find scarce funds to do needed work on Notre Dame de Paris.

Vending machine 2018. So sad.

It was built approx 800.00 years ago with 50 acres of timber. Dried and ready.:(
Latest news is that all the artifacts, paintings, etc., were evacuated
I am heartbroken for this loss. I last visited there about 20 years ago, I was planning a more extended future visit to Paris. This is a huge loss for the world.
Am digging out my old photos (pre digicam) to relive that visit. Hard to believe it is mostly gone.

Picture I took last spring in the cathedral. A wooden replica inside the real thing. Glad to see it before this tragic fire.

I am sickened and left speechless by this...

I would have to think "some" of it. Stuff like this, no.

Looks like they updated the article and now saying, “A deputy mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, said the cathedral had suffered "colossal damages." But officials said emergency services managed to salvage some of the art and other priceless pieces stored in the cathedral. ”
The initial chaos. The news is jumbled and contradicting.

Lightening used to de-roof a cathedral every once in awhile & they would just rebuild it.
It's irresponsible of them if there were no night watchmen employed during restoration.
Workmen use modern lightening as a tool now after all.

I am glad I once got to visit the Cathedral and am devastated by the loss.

Terrible devastation but soon it will be time to look forward and start rebuilding. Notre Dame will rise again.
It does sound like they got a lot of stuff out. Seems like an old fashioned bucket brigade was going on. (@Anne_Hidalgo twitter, translated)
"Thanks to the @PompiersParis, the police and the municipal agents who realized tonight a formidable human chain to save the works of #OurDame. The crown of thorns, the tunic of Saint Louis and several other major works are now in a safe place."

I have read that a couple of wealthy French citizens have pledged over $300 million for restoration....Also the Catholic Church does not own the building ... it is state owned, but operated by the Church. Cheers, RickO
I feel fortunate to have experienced the place. I have many happy memories of Paris, and so much of the city endures through the ages... but what happened yesterday was a cold reminder that nothing, nothing lasts forever.

And yet initial photos appear to reveal that significant art and other interior structures survived. Obviously not sure about damage from fire/water, but certainly not a catastrophic collapse initially feared.
All the more reason to be impressed by the master craftsmen and folks who spent nearly 200 year building this magnificent structure.
Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.
Yes, the first photos from last night and the first photos from this morning look very very hopeful.
IMGUR had a series of interior photos from this morning that happily showed major walls, glass and statues intact. Something to be thankful for.
The news today is better. She’s a tough old lady and she’ll come roaring back. The more than 1/2 billion dollars in pledged aid might exceed the needs. The statues from the roof were removed for restoration just days earlier. Something tells me we Americans should help. The friendship between our two countries is deep.
