Brief report: Charlottesville, Va. coin show

So, I drove up to Charlottesville yesterday for the coin show sponsered by the local coin club. It was held at the Elks Lodge, a smallish but comfortable space for the number of dealers who attended, watched over by a massive Elk head mounted on the wall. ( there was additional, human security present as well). I was there to meet my sister, a Monticello tour guide, and her husband, to look for some coins for their grandkids to pick through (they have shown some interest in collecting).
We arrived around 10:30, and there was a steady flow of people. A number of dealers were known to me from the Richmond coin show. As my relatives were not familiar with coin grading, or many US series, I showed them a few things about the grading services and coin pricing. My brother in law, it turned out, knew a few dealers already, either through his job or church, so we we re off to a pretty good start. One of the dealers had a lot of rolls of Lincolns, so we bought a few for the kids to pick through, and a few British large cents from the 50's and 60's, just because they are, well, big coins! I plan to get them some lincoln cent folders, magnifiers, and throw in the cents from my Dad's old folder, mostly pre 1950. That should give them something to do on the beach trip we have every year.
I made a couple of small buys, a 24-s for the LOC SLQ album, and a nicely toned 1913 type 2 Buff that I will image when I have time. As as been the case lately, I saw very little attractive seated coinage, and few original bust coins One gentleman, whose specialty is actually confederate money, had some nice bust halves (no dates that I needed); and a nice 1795 flowing hair half (raw) in F but had already agreed to sell it. I had to leave about noon so missed lunch, which sounded pretty good as the Elks' chef was making barbecue, I heard.
Later in the day C-ville was going to be full with the celebration for the 'Hoos winning their NCAA championship.
Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy Saturday morning.

Nice report. And, lucky, lucky you: Grand kids interested in coins!!! I hope your encouragement does the trick and they permanently pick up the collecting instinct.
Thank you.
Thanks for the report
I enjoyed your report.
Sounds like you had fun.
I'll look for that buff pic.

Thanks for the nice show report... sounds like a good show... Those smaller local shows can often produce some good finds. Cheers, RickO
