Top set finally complete..ok so I am braggin

I just finished my mint state set of 3cent nickels and it was unbelievably tough..If anyone wants a challenge go ahead and try this one it makes my other sets look like light weights from a tough to find standpoint..the set has many stand alone finest including the only MS68 for the entire series..special thanks to Ron Iskowitz for starting me in the pursuit and Jim Swan for a tough to find coin and especially to Laura at Legend for many of those stand alone finest coins...wow its like the academy awards without the tux....BruceScher

Wowee! What an amazing set! The "odd" denominations are really interesting, and the design of the three-cent nickel is really cool. Congratulations!!!!image

Bruce - An amazingly high graded set, congratulations! Can you share some more info - How long did it take you to complete? Are the coins toned? White? Mixed? How much harder was the MS set to complete compared to your Proof set? Finally, your thoughts on the 3CN market, what have prices done recently and why for the high end grades? Thanks. I stop and chat with Ron at every show, he's a good guy. Congrats again, based on the pop numbers, looks like your #1 for a long time.

Awesome set, I still need the big 4 (1883, 1884, 1885 and 1887) and I just have them in lowly circulated grades. A true accomplishment, especially all of those pop 1/0 coins.

First of all, congrats to Bruce on the 3CN set.

Second, I am impressed (but not really surprised) that Laura thanked Bruce for the opportunity to help in completing such a set. It is rare to hear that from a dealer especially when in possible earshot of another customer. :-)
It is nice to see a sense of emotional involvement in such set building.

Third: I am curious, being that the MS-68 is the only one so far slabbed by PCGS what were the special qualities that made such coin (1888) so special? Is it strike, surface, color, a certain combination of the above? It would be nice to hear a specific lecture by both Laura and Bruce as to the qualities that made that 1888 so special.

Incidentally, I see that the 1888 has been around a long time. It must be in a green insert slab? I see it in the pop reports going back to at LEAST 1996 or early 1997.

Now, Bruce don't suddenly flip flop on us so fast! Hang onto the set for at least 5 to 10 years!!!!

I just saw the Wm. Dominick 1918-D dime in in PCGS MS-65 FB sell tonight for $23,000 including the buyers fee which is a DRAMATIC drop for the low $40's it sold for only a year ago!!!!

An admirable numismatic achievement, congrats. I prefer two cents more, myself, but do have one for my type set I admire. So not once, not twice, but ... III ... way to go!

Wow..thanks for all the kind words i appreciate it, sure is nice to find a forum for us coin folks..to answer a few specific questions. Royashki asks just how hard, well pretty darn in most any grade the coins are real hard to find and at the ms65 and above just.,.Impossible, had a much easier time putting together the top proof walker and mercury dime sets.. How it compares to the proof 3 cents..the prrof's are readily available in all dates and are quite pretty also in my opinion way undervalued especially in the pr66 and above grades..Iam quite proud of those proof 3 cents they are spectacular looking coins but the proofs can be had the ms coins can't also the 1883 and 1884 have almost no pop. in any grade as most all coins struck were proof..Oreville asks of any unique traits on the MS68? well just a little cleaner I would say and super super lustre not seen on any of the others in the set and yes it is an old label..hope this helps..I have learned so much from the real experts. Its nice we have a hobby where these guys so freely educate. Bruce Scher

Bruce - Only a collector really understands the love and commitment another collector puts into his or her collection. When you go on to build a world class set , then you have set a standard of excellence for all the rest of us to admire and emulate. Best wishes on a remarkable and outstanding effort. Regards Bear

  • Bruce--

Great job. The circulation strikes of several of those series are TOUGH--3CN,3CS and shield nickel. Yours(consistent with your others sets) is in extremely high grade! Way to go.

Bruice: Could you be a little more specific on the MS-68. Perhaps you and Laura could give differnet perspectives on this?

The brilliant kind of luster (lustre) or the creamy deep luster?

Also any contrast between device and fields?

Any pics? I do not recall seeing this coin.

    Just trying to learn.

    Thanks!
