I only recently heard of the trumpet tail from a youtube video that mentioned it.
when I checked my set that my stepfather purchased as a 9 coin set of 1944 through 1946 claiming they were all made of shell casings i found that mine looked exactly like the one that recently sold for 5k...
to it appears it could also be an OMM.

what is the story behind the trumpet tail s with this and other coins?
can anyone confirm ?

Yes that is a trumpet tail mm. No it is not a $5K coin.

  • so what is the trumpet tail worth? I have not seen that mentioned in the error list though the video I saw says it is there.
here is the condition of mine....
is a really nice 9 coin set.... I believe my stepdad paid around $50 for the set.
    the video was by jbcoins.
link to follow. and apology, sold for $4k talk about getting a person excited...

That looks more like the inverted S in the Cherry Pickers Guide... Cheers, RickO

I always recommend searching through ebay listings to see what other examples look like. I think you will find many that look like this. Not sure how that coin garnered $5,000 hammer? Two people really must have wanted this one!

1946-S cent is common with (trumpet tail) and without (knob tail) serifs. There are quite a few rpms:
