Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week - 1940-S DDO-001

I'm getting down to the wire on the few remaining holes in my "All Variety" Jefferson Set. In all my years looking at 1940-S's trying to pick the S/S RPM FS-501, I never really looked at the obverse very closely. Once I did start looking, the DDO has been elusive. I've only found two over the course of a couple years. The first one was pretty banged up, so I waited to find one nicer to warrant the $$ for grading. I finally did and this is it. Nice looking MS64. This DDO is fairly obvious from the thick letters in LIBERTY. You have to be careful differentiating this DDO from worn dies. The 1940-S is pretty common with blow-out dies that make the lettering and other details very mushy. This example has nice crisp edges to the lettering that lets you know the thickness is due to doubling.

I can always use some help filling a hole or two in my set! Who has a 1939-S Rev40 RPM-001?

Happy hunting!

Very nice BigDawg. Do all of those missing have a variety?

I see pictures all the time of thickened letters or motto or what-have-you and I can never tell a difference. I appreciate the eye you have and the work it must have taken to put your set together!

That's a great question DIMEMAN! Actually, not all of the holes have a known variety of any kind. 10 of the 17 needed to complete the set don't have any known. Below is the list of remaining dates:

1938-S, NONE, though you see a pretty nice DDR in my set, still working on James Wiles to change his mind!
1939-D Rev40, NONE, though you see a DDO in my set, again working James over!
    1939-S Rev38, DDR-001
    1939-S Rev40, RPM-001
1946, DDR-001 being added soon, found one!
    1948, DDO-001 and a couple DDRs
    1949, NONE
    1950, NONE
    1950-D, NONE
    1951, NONE
1951-D, NONE I'm surprised there is not an RPM for this one! The Mint Die Makers must have been sober that day!
    1952, DDO-001
    1953, NONE
    1955, NONE
    1958, NONE
    1960, DDR-016
1964 SMS, who was the genius who had this one added to the set???

I love finding those DISCOVERY pieces! I have 12 listed with CONECA! I'll save that for another post!

For as many dates that are missing in my set, it's pretty amazing I'm ranked #2 in the non-FS Set. Now help me find some!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Wiles doesn't change his mind. :s
