Need A Silver Fix, and on the brink? Stay away from Brinks!

Don't do it my friend; I've had horrible fortune...

From time to time; I enjoy searching rolls of half dollars for silver, varieties, oddities, and proofs. I've found foreign coins, Panamanian, Canadian, lotsa silver, some cool varieties- '71-DDO, '74-DDO, '82 no FG, and some washers, along with many proofs that were cracked out of proof sets that I refer to as cigarette money.

I've had most of my luck with Loomis when roll searching...my worse is Brinks.

I recently exchanged $1,000 for half dollars at the local bank. I was informed they no longer had Loomis...when I asked who supplies coin needs they wouldn't tell me. I took a chance, and exchanged for two boxes. When I saw they had Brinks when I picked up; my heart sank...what a waste of time, and endeavor... No silver- just one proof coin I found by chance...a bicentennial. :(

I didn't take time to search for varieties, outside of silver search, because between 6-8 halves per roll had wheel marks, and not worth the disappointment. A lot of chewed up halves...

I've had good luck just asking what rolls banks had on hand... ;)

Please share your experiences to help the roll hunters.

I haven't had a lot of luck with BWR, much better with CWR in halves. Only $70 bought the other day, but had $72 worth when placed in coin machine afterwards - less the two 40% halves I scarfed.

I never went for the big boxes... I just ask for rolls of halves... lately I have modified that request to 'customer' rolls...One's that customers bring in for deposit. I do not get as many rolls now, but have more time for other things. ;) Cheers, RickO

Better be careful I don't think they are obligated to buy them back.

The bank I deposit change with I have accounts- they know I geek out over coins. I treat the bank tellers to a dozen assorted donuts from time to time because they put up with my shenanigans.

I've never heard of a bank not taking change back- did this happen to you, or, does anyone know of this happening? Interesting.
