Have we covered all the bases for coin grading or sticker services?

There are four major grading services. Folks have their preferences but generally two are considered to be top tier and two are considered to be second tier. Along with those four there are a few other services considered third tier. Additionally at least one service grades foreign coins and another grades moderns. All have a following.

Another major source for grading opinion is CAC. If you were the owner of CAC, would you expand your service to any graded coin by any company if it met your standard? Would you grade tokens? Can you think of any area of grading that is open for another type of grading service?

I would expand. If I was the owner of CAC and my goal was to look at and sticker higher tier coins for the grade I would look at coins in any holder. A nice looking coin is a nice looking coin no matter what holder there in

Brown beans for "low for the grade" lowball collectors.

If I ran CAC, I think I'd keep it to just NGC and PCGS slabs, since IMO, the others are all over the map "however" I'd open my services to accept direct submission from all collectors and not just the privileged.

I wouldn't expand. They have their hands full with NGC and PCGS coins. Plus they have to look at who will take over and look at coins when John retires.

I never understood why PCGS never offered grading ancient coins ? ?

No. My goal would be to make as much money as possible with the least amount of work. Considering other services is more work than it is worth in most cases.

I think we need to put populations "lower" not just higher when we are talking graded coins....;)

No - the market has already decided and prefers the top 2. Foregone conclusion.

The only thing that remains the same, is change itself. There is no doubt in my mind that we will see change in the grading industry... perhaps real standards, a new company, and yes, expanded CAC areas are likely at some point. No one (in general) foresaw CAC... it exploded onto the numismatic scene amidst great controversy. Now, if is firmly established, honored and certainly valued in pricing and selection. Change will come....Cheers, RickO

Who are the other TPG's that specialize in modern or world coins?

On an individual basis, the names associated with these companies command great respect in the hobby.

Still, there is a wide gulf in value and it is real.

For whatever reason if I don't see crossover to PCGS at same grade or upgrade I pass. ANACS, ICG, and NGC included.

I think there is opportunity in world coins, but again how deep is the bench of graders and experts?

I think we should keep it where it is. With early type, I’ve seen a lot of average coins with CAC stickers. Expanding the CAC pop reports will only devalue those coins already stickered.

I would think CAC grading other TPGs would be equivalent to a "likely to cross" service. I could see CAC adding areas by hiring whoever the equivalent of JA is for tokens or ancients or whatever.

There is enough at this buffet for me.

The TPG question has settled to two major TPG based on eBay items listed.

For CAC I regard this as a separate market with its own bid / markup structure. I can see market players buying / chasing non CAC coins they feel will CAC if they submit, especially if the bid in the sheet for CAC is considerably more than the non CAC piece. They then they will need successful execution of the play getting that money. This is where the coin itself comes in. I bid on CAC coins if can buy right. The 30 min tape JA posted about CAC has fueled my interest in that material.

Can one get more for these CAC coins based on their higher bids in the sheet? I have but defer to the saying “football games are played on grass.”

Actually. enough folks prefer the taste of RC and Nehi to make them very popular. While soda is soda and all are basically the same - they taste good and rot your teeth, I too have a personal favorite.

If you saw the way coins were sent into those TPGS w/o special submission requirements, you would possibly change your opinion.

    Oversight. We need oversight. :joy:

The idea that only TWO TPGS are worthy for sticker consideration partly discredits the CAC sticker. If the sticker is to meant to reflect meeting or exceeding the accepted market standard then apply that consideration to all TPGS. Maybe from a business standpoint CAC isn't able to handle that sort of volume yet and make it cost beneficial but there are coins residing in other TPGS holders that meet or exceed the grading standard, though likely at lower percentages than PCGS/NGC.
