Reducing my gold hoard...........

In the latest email to subscribers from Doug Winter Numismatics (disclaimer, I have no affiliation with DWN):
"If New Orleans gold is not your collecting focus, please remember that DWN always has choice, interesting US gold coins available for sale on our site. In mid-April we will be featuring the Spacehayduke Collection which contains some exceptional Classic Head quarter eagles and Liberty Head half eagles, nearly all graded by PCGS and approved by CAC."
It is painfully true. Some gold pieces that I will never be able to find again are gone, gone, gone. Had to do it and I am having withdrawals. So watch the DWN website if you are interested.

Wow, some nice coins. Hate to hear you are having regrets.
Hey space, how long have you been collecting pal?
I know that you are having regrets for selling your coins. Remember
this, you were able to own and hold in your hands many beautiful
treasures that many of us only dream about. You have many fond
memories of these treasures, some times those are the best.
Wow, very nice !!!
Can’t wait for the offering!
Latin American Collection
Those are lovely. I would hate to part with them.
First one was bought from Doug in 2004.
Here are some of my other favorites from the group that Doug will be listing. All of these are likely, or nearly like to be once in a lifetime acquisitions. Note the true colors of all of these are slightly less red-orange. I get a red shift when I upload images to this site. Good luck to all who looks for Doug's listing of these, you won't be disappointed. So please take care of them for me as I will miss them very much.
This one crossed to PCGS P58/CAC
Any other NO $5's in the sale?
Latin American Collection
NICE ....and rare... coins.
Yes. 56-O, 46-O, both P/CAC.

The 41-D $2.50 is my favorite!
Bump with a question for readers and the op, and i know there is no easy answer, but if you could acquire either a bust dollar or a Charlotte/ dahlohnega gold piece, which would you choose. slight chance I may get to make an acquisition like this during the year, I have been collecting both type coins and old gold....both interest me, but curious on people’s thoughts for which might bring longer term numanistic happiness?
I guess it depends on how you define "numismatic happiness"...are you speaking to simple price appreciation or the emotional attachment that Spacehayduke obviously feels to this collection of old gold coins that he is selling?
I like Bust Dollars, but when comparing them to old gold branch mint coins you must keep in mind that the surviving populations of Bust Dollars are measured in the 1000s vs.old gold which are in the 100s. And many of the latter have been abused over the last 150 to 200 years so to find great original examples like those in Spacehayduke's collection is extremely difficult. It literally has taken him 15 years to find many of these coins, and as he says once sold he may never be able to find another.
Not to be condescending, but these are not the kind of coins that will be available to you once you find the money...these are the type of coins that you see and your eyes pop out and you buy and ask the price later.
This is very true. If you are going to collect old gold, you have to be ready when the right one comes available. Some of these above, it took me 3 seconds of viewing in hand at Doug's table to know they were the right coins. I simply told Doug, 'I'll take it how much should I write the check for'. Some of these are obtainable only once. So when Doug lists these, be ready if you are interested. He has a committed clientele and the best ones should go fast.

SH, everyone of your coins are beautiful. I certainly understand how you feel about parting with them, but rest assured they will all find good homes. Congratulations assembling such a terrific collection.
I really like how your pictures turned out. First time I have seen the CAC imposed like that.
Outstanding Gold!
SH and Jonruns, thanks for the insight...gives me something to think about. Will be watching and maybe participating in the sale
Wow! I don't collect these but I've always coveted them. These examples are superb. SH, this must be very difficult.
Lance.
Lance it was tough but had to significantly reduce the value of my collection, this was the most straightforward way to do that. I still have alot of great coins so I am sure I will survive.
I am pretty excited, even though the coins are sold already to Doug, he goes live tomorrow with my ex-gold. Can't wait to see what he says about the best ones. We had some great conversation over many of the pieces.

The 39-C 2.5$ is saaaaawwwweeeeeett!

I just went to Doug's site to look for your coins. Can't seem to find them?!?
Friday 9 AM PST.
SHD -- congratulations!!! It looks like most of your coins quickly found new homes...and I note that many of your favorites must have been pre-sold and didn't even make it to the dance!!!
Thanks! Yup apparently so, about half of them did not make it to the online offering, including my 2 favorite quarter eagles and some of my favorite half eagles.
Best, SH
The fact that they went so quickly is a testiment to your eye for quality. All are extremely nice coins!
Congrats on the sale again, great coins and quality
Latin American Collection
Congrats!
I helped an eagle find a new home.
So in light of the fact that so many of them didn’t make it to the online offering that suggests that people paid more than you sold for and very quickly... I wish you would have offered at least a few for sale on BST board first.
Not the way it works. The reason why they went quickly at higher prices was because who was selling them, Doug Winter. No chance I would have got the same prices. Doug is the trusted dealer in numismatic gold, you pay over what I can sell them for to get his opinion. This is just the way it is.
Plus, I sold as a complete package to him (33 coins). Had I not done that, I would have not got as strong prices as I did from him for some of the weaker ones and, I would have had to spend my time trying to find buyers for everything, taken the risk etc. etc.. Rather Doug gets his cut and does the work, we both benefit as do the buyer who know they are getting a great coin backed by the best dealer in the gold buis.

Congrats on the sale! Well said. I’ve tried to sell coins here for what a dealer like Doug would pay or slightly more and get no interest or flack for the price.....just to have those same people pay hundreds and often thousands more because the same coin is listed with a trusted dealer after I sell it to them instead.
It can be frustrating for both sides but it is what it is. The BST can be good for certain things, but not necessarily high end collections or dealer niche items.
That does make sense; selling as a large lot to a well known Dealer-Specialist would increase the exposure for sure. Thanks for the elaboration and I hope you get to enjoy the rest of your collection for a long, long time.
