Incomplete year stamped on coins

Has anyone ever come across coins with incomplete years? The quarter I have is in pretty good condition with regard to not being worn anywhere. Using a magnifier it doesn't look like there was ever any 4th digit stamped, and only 198. I tried web searches to get more info without any luck.

Die Fill Error, nice find.
Welcome to the coin forum
Grease of other material filled the die so the # was not struck up. Very common in general, but your is very dramatic in regard to the detail that was lost.
Welcome aboard, cool quarter

Invaluable resource for you to take a look at: http://www.error-ref.com/struck-through-smooth-viscous-material-grease-oil/
Nice, "score" !!!
Great find! it's a keeper!
@ksweeney.... Welcome aboard.... Take some time to familiarize yourself with the coin minting process... the coin is 'stamped' as an entire unit (the date is not done separately). What you see on that coin is the result of a grease filled die most likely. A good coin to keep for educational purposes. Cheers, RickO
Nice error quarter, @ksweeney !
I have one similar quarter. A good "companion" coin to yours!
The fellow who stamped the "4" was out sick for a couple of days. Same thing for the one above - only "1" and "9" stampers showed up for work that day.
GEEEEEEEEE.........so THAT'S how it happens.

Yep -- you see, they really don't use big coin presses. It's all done in a big gray building. People sit before long tables and use hammers to punch the designs, letters and dates onto coin planchets. They are each specialists in a certain coin design or letter. It's all very secret stuff....

They must all be on "double secret probation" Roger. It must be a real art to punch those Doubled Die ones.
Will the mysteries ever stop?

The B on the Neck is interesting but you could polish it away. Not sure
Best place to buy !
