Hey guys, is there any "safe" way to get grease off a coin that someone applied grease to hide fine scratches?

    Acetone soak and rinse.

Pure acetone is safe for as long as you need to soak it.

    Don’t scrub or rub.

Acetone is an organic solvent and will not affect the metal. It is useful for removing organic deposits (i.e. grease, oils, dirt etc.). Use the high grade acetone (not nail polish remover) and rinse well. Do not reuse. Cheers, RickO

Put the acetone in a glass jar of some type with a lid, so that the acetone does not evaporate. A long soak is safe, and grease may require a multi day soak. If needed, however, I would change out the acetone after a day or so. When you are done with the soak, rinse the coin with fresh acetone . After doing this, let us know where it stands.

Acetone is best but you can try a warm soap soak first no rubbing

Dish washing detergent such as Dawn have degreasers so that should also work.

It was a 1835 half cent with mint errors,,, but it was not greased in the pics, when it showed it had been freshly greased,, I just returned it to be honest, but I have an 1886 Morgan, with real dark ugly toning, I am gonna try the acetone on that one and see how it comes out

Do not rub. Blot the coin With a q-tip soaked in acetone. Acetone is extremely volatile and will evaporate in seconds. No smoking. Peace Roy
