Is it usually a decent show? That would be about a 2 hour drive for me.
Collector, occasional seller
It is an okay show; rate it at C+.
Next week will be a "better" show in Springfield, Illinois; (flyer says 72 dealers) most of the dealers at the Gillespie show will be in Springfield also,
The show is mostly local dealers from St. Louis and mid-Illinois which I see at the shows in and around St. Louis.
Report please.
It's a nice little show.
I won't be there thus year but have been there many times.
Friendly folks there!
If you go it's a good time.
Be sure to stay around till the end for the auction.
Super fun times!
Please give us a show report.... we who must endure areas with no shows or shops thrive on this information. Cheers, RickO
I would have loved to set up but I have appointments in NE Illinois that week. Springfield (CINA) is a no go for me as there is a waiting list for tables. There is one I will be at in Collinsville, IL on Sunday, April 7th at the American Legion.
I did attend the Gillespie Coin Show
Took me a little less than 90 minutes to get from south St. Louis County to Gillespie arriving a few minutes before 9:00am. The Gillespie Civic Center is a small building. The parking lot was much more crowed than usual. There was not a crowd at 9:00am. At 9:30 there were a couple of dealers still setting up their tables. At around 10;30 there was a good crowd. A few places there was barely enough room to squeeze by customers .
There were a couple of dealers in ancient coins, one table had signed baseball cards and signed baseball photos; another had regular baseball cards. There was one table of jewelry.
There was a fair amount of currency. Most of the dealers had more raw coins than slabbed.
At 11:30 or so one of the members from the Hilltop Coin Club was going around asking dealers how they were doing -- I heard most of them say they were doing good.
Most of these dealers will be at the Springfield, Illinois coin show next Sunday, March 24.
In my post above I rated the Gillespie shows at C+; this time was a little better at B- maybe even a B.
I also went to the Gillespie show today, getting there around 9:30. I second most of what Lew said. Nice mix of reasonably priced and interesting material, a good sized crowd at least while I was there and people seemed to be spending money. I found it interesting that the ancient dealer - who I've known for a while - indicated he'd had a good show when I talked with him around noon. While there was nothing in "my" area of interest (STL metro area nationals), I was pleasantly surprised to find a few solid pieces for my secondary collections and even a Christmas gift for my grandson. And I had a few fun conversations with folks I don't see that often. I think an overall B grade is fair given my experience, well worth my 90+ minute trip (which was longer since I took the slower, nonhighway route from STL looking for a couple of old national bank buildings), and it was certainly better and more fun than the last couple of smaller shows I've attended. I also think that the Hilltop club members - several of whom were noticeable by their matching t-shirts - should be commended for putting on a nice show today.
Thanks for the reports. I may try to get over to Gillespie for a show one day.
I knew it would happen.
