I bought this coin ~50 years ago off a Coin World add when I was a young lad. There are no arrows by the date and the reverse has rays. What do you think happened to this coin?

The arrows were removed.
Obviously scraped off

This is one of the very few times that I've (at least partly) disagreed with you, Fred. I think it's quite possible that the arrows might have been removed by means other than scraping.

Perhaps scraped off with a tool? How about "Smoothed." That's a "harmless" sounding word to describe a damaged coin's surface.
Well, I was using the term in general.
Smoothed is the term I would use after
it was scraped. (!)

Code 94 is Altered Surfaces.
Smoothed, tooled...

Scraped works for me. Or bludgeoned. Whatever.
How about post mint omission?
Looks like the arrow where taken off.
If I wanted to copy the coin in question and put it through a couple of filters do I have to ask permission and if so , May I and the show all what the filters look like.
Orbital sander? Belt sander? No, not smooth enough...
I like the sound of, "ground off".
I bought this coin when I was ~12 for $10. I remember telling my father that the arrows were removed but I never did return the coin. My father told me that it was too much of a hassle to return a $10 coin.
“Ground off— one, two!
Ground off — three, four!
Ground off — one, two, three, four,
One, two — three! four!”
A real obvious tool job.... Cheers, RickO
Someone thought they had a scratch of ticket

what a hack job
Decent deceit but I've seen worse. I love the 1858's that had the 8 tooled. Hey for $10 you can't go wrong.
I did a lot worse at the local B&M when I was 12. Sad.
Did they have Dremel tools 50 years back??
