W-Cent worth the price of the Proof Set?

I've been eyeing the new 2019 Proof Set from the Mint. I really want that W-cent but I just really don't like buying clad coins from the mint. I wonder if there might be another way to get that W-cent.

Wait a few months after the novelty wears off and the prices plummet. Just like every other new Mint product.

The clad mint set has an unlimited mintage so you have all year and into next year. Unless the cent has an unpublished limit there is no rush.

You have to wait until the fervor has subsided and post-mint sales are stabilized if not buying from the Mint.

Is it worth it? No. Will I buy one anyway? Yes.

If you just want the cent, best to just buy it on the secondary market. If you are afraid of getting one that is picked over you can always buy the set from the Mint and spend the other proof coins.

Buy the proof set, keep the 'W', then instead of shopping and spending $20-30 on a gift for someone, give the proof set.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

A zinc Lincoln is a zinc Lincoln, no matter what the mint mark is. Give it 40 years and it will self destruct.

I would say to also add the rocketship for 9.95 as a topper for the gift, but they went unavailable yesterday.

I see I can purchase one, already graded, for $35.00. Now it's ONLY a 69 but a lot less expensive then me sending mine in.

The cent is in a separate envelope.

The cent being in a separate envelope makes me feel like this was a special gift from the mint for purchasing the proof set, rather than an integral part of the set. Looking down the road, do you think third party purchasers will expect to receive the cent as part of the proof set?

If I recall, the 1996-W dime was in a separate cello pack but was within the little folder with the other cello packs.

Recent clad proof sets are absolutely dead on the secondary market. The "W" cent is an attempt by the mint to boost sales. It may work for a short while but will then disappear into the mist of "made for collector" issues.

    All glory is fleeting.

Unfortunately, quality control on the free W cent seems lacking... lots of complaints and pictures posted of really trashed coins. It honestly looks like they made a bag and pulled them out with a rake to put into a plastic sack.

They are already being sold on ebay - help yourself.

Yes, even though packaged separately, it is part of the set.

If you buy a 1996 Mint Set today and you do not get the 1996-W dime, even though it was packaged separately, your set is NOT complete and you will get substantially less for it than the published bid/ask prices.

That’s why I have mailed the proof sets to the children in the family (w/o the cent) and included a rocketship without messing with the Kennedy’s. Out-of-sight, out-of-mind.
