1989 Rotten To The Core Donald Trump rookie card.....

edited February 27, 2019 8:38PM in Trading Cards & Memorabilia Forum

Now that diversity is encouraged I decided to start a thread on the main board about this card.

This is a very fun card. In 1989 a company named Eclipse that was a big comic book company came out with a set of cards to depict and take shots at the New York power players. Donald J. Trump the real estate tycoon was naturally featured.

The set sat dormant with no real following until 2016 when Trump's push for the White House took off and someone discovered he was in the set.

Here is the interview with the man Dean Mullaney discussing the creation of the set from early 2016 and from this point forward the card became known and raw copies started getting submitted to PSA.

https://www.wnyc.org/story/trumps-deal-making-confidence-1989-now/

There has been a seller from the New York area that has submitted quite a few and I purchased three copies from him and I am betting he found a large stash of well kept sets. The card is really not that tough in a 10 so far and there are plenty out there at the moment but it will be interesting to see if this increase in supply continues or levels off. As it stands now there are 47 PSA 10's. One thing that makes this card attractive is it is like a novelty item and something fun to own for Trump supporters. The prices of these have been all over the map so it will be interesting to see where they are in a few years.

Here is a scan of one of my PSA 10's. I purchased the third copy to give to my twin brother Bill as a Christmas present.

As you can see it is a cool image of the bad guy Donald Trump the ruthless real estate developer. In the past year I was able to acquire a signed copy and this is a particularly interesting card because so far there are no red flip copies and only the blue flip copy I purchased is known. It is signed in gold and the full Trump auto. He has changed his signature significantly in the past two years and most are just the scribble version. I honestly don't see how many of these are going to surface. It is going to take someone very close to him to get one signed with a full signature or at all. Before anyone says spam, yes I have this card advertised on EBAY for fun and have it priced at level with auto decline where it isn't going to sell. I have no real intentions of selling it.

Love him or hate him a signed rookie card of the president is pretty damn cool.

Very cool always thinking outside the box with your cards. Good stuff.
I can see these cards getting a price boost. Thanks for sharing

Very cool pick up. Presidential autos have always interested me. I’ve been eyeing the signed inauguration ticket stubs on eBay. Haven’t bought one yet though. I did pick up an unsigned ticket stub though and it’s snow balled into trying to get all of the Presidential inauguration tickets.

That looks like the same signature on the checks he sent to Cohen. I think it's good.

    Haha

It would be really interesting to know the back story on the card. The guy I bought it from was selling a signed Hugh Hefner rookie so maybe he was into these oddball sets and getting them signed. Trump put out a number of books and many are hand signed and I compared the signatures and this does look spot on.

Very cool. There is definitely some very neat presidential memorabilia out there. Post some pics of the ticket stubs.

I have to wonder what other signed cards by presidents are out there.

Doing a quick search here is one from EBAY that must be very rare.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/PRESIDENT-ULYSSES-S-GRANT-AUTOGRAPH-SIGNED-PHOTO-CABINET-CARD-AUTHENTIC-/123526898835?hash=item1cc2c6e493:g:FQIAAOSwTEZcB067&nma=true&si=YGsAj1iDYIatoOap%2BuZCPhTx34Q%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Just imagine if George Bush signed one of his 1990 Topps cards. That would bring huge money!

I think the time to cash in on Trump memorabilia is while he is still actually president. I think once his term(s) is over it will all crash back down. He is a bit of an oddity since he was already famous before he took office. Kinda like Reagan, but Reagan was more wholesome and liked.

Just my thoughts. Not saying you even want to sell.

Important to remember with president autograph items that they are generally worth a lot more when signed while president, than before or after.

The Grant item "not authenticated" - I'll pass on that one even though it does sort of look good. But clever forgers and scam artists these days can make a lot of things "look good" when it ain't.

Case in point, I like to buy and sell antiques and vintage items. About 2 years before Trump became president I bought a sealed Trump board game from the 80s. Paid a couple of bucks for it and at the time it was going for $10. I stashed to the the side, then he got elected. I pulled it back out and got $100 for it.. the presidential price bump is real lol.

He had an impact on the game. I am just one of 328.5 million so I am irrelevant. The first one was a tough call and people thought I was nuts and I collected on a bet. This is the easy one.

Hey Guys... My name is Todd Tobias, and I am going to be moderating the forum a bit - more on that in another post!

I just wanted to thank everyone for keeping this thread within the realm of hobby talk, as it could have gone the other way. Please continue keep up the discussion. And while talking about the 2020 election comment just barely started down the political road, the subsequent Joe Willie & Super Bowl III reference and talk was a great change of direction! If you can't tell, I'm a huge AFL fan!

    I couldn't agree more!

As was pointed out by another board member I like to buy into cards that are off the beaten path that have a shot to go up.

Both of these cards regardless of value are fun to own and it is cool when I show them to people because they lose it and think they are so awesome.

I won close to $800 on Trump getting elected. Sportsbook.au had given me a few free bets in the spring leading up to the election which I placed on some random Cubs games, won those initial bets and then got 12-1 odds on him and figured why not.

I look forward to placing some real money on him for 2020 if they wanna give him long odds to winning re-election.

An example sold yesterday for $160.

When I first came across the card I bought a copy for $59.99 with shipping and then bought the next two for $69.99 apiece and then it ran up to $199. Some time went by and it pulled back to $74 and then a little higher and then it ran up to $151 and now $160.

This is a very volatile card and hopefully it can hold this rebound and try and go higher again.

Edit: I had just done a search on recent sales and didn't scroll down on my phone. Three of them actually sold yesterday and all to the same buyer I see after going to Watchcount.com $160, $170 +$5, and $199.

There haven't been any fresh 10's listed since the sales on the 3rd of this month.

The PSA 10 population report still sits at 47 so no fresh copies graded.

This population total is going to be really worth watching in the next 12 months because if it doesn't expand much this card has a shot to really rise. There was some incredibly bullish activity surrounding the subject in the past few days so like an athlete there are some reasons for increased demand.

It is going to be very interesting to see what happens with this card.

From a memorabilia standpoint, that is an awesome artifact! (referring to the card, not the mug). It appears that it is still trying to find its footing in terms of price. Presidential memorabilia has its following, that is for sure.

I found it interesting that a local flea market sort of place had one of Donald Trump's autographed books...for $400. I bet it wasn't nearly that much until a couple years ago! You think Doc Brown in the first Back to the Future movie thought it was absurd that "The actor!?!?" was the (then) future President...imagine if they did a "BttF: The Next Generation" and someone went back to the 80s Doc Brown and when told who the President is, he'd say "The casino guy!?!?!?"
