1880 Morgan dollar with an "X"

I inherited my grandmother's coin collection. I found this 1880 Morgan dollar, but I noticed an "x" scribed on the cheek. Does this mean that it was a fake and someone marked it as such? I don't know why else someone would mark it with this.

No. Probably just scratched.
Just a mutilated coin. Serious rim nicks as well. It is real but would be considered a cull when sold.
Thanks for your input. It is unfortunate that someone would do this to a coin, but I guess with the other damage, it wouldn't have mattered. I will probably keep it. Sentimental value. It is the oldest dollar she had. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't fake. The "x" makes it unique.
Probably some cowboy marking the coins he got paid with before he went into town to get drunk and find HISSELF a woman.

You're sitting on the porch of the general store in 1880 while your wife is inside getting a few things.
She sees the neighboring farmers wife and what should have taken 10 minutes is now an hour of catching up on the township gossip.
You're bored out of your mind.
A big area of soft metal is an inviting canvas for graffiti.
The 'X' is probably the most common.

X marks the spot price of silver...however in your case it’s an heirloom so no doubt a keeper
I have a 1901 Morgan with an "x" marking the spot on her cheek. Was given to me by my father from change about 60 years ago. Stuck it in my Dansco.
I think there's more to the mystery than people realize. I actually questioned the "X" on many Morgan dollars that I had seen in a previous thread many moons ago. At one time I had four Morgan dollars that I had received from different places and they all had the "X" on the cheek. We'll probably never know the story behind it but I believe it's more than just graffiti.
The 'X' happens with other coins too:
United States $20 1864-S
The Mysterious Egyptian Magic Coin
Coins in Movies
Coins on Television
It just looked almost as though someone scribed the X with a straight edge or they had a steady hand. Odd to say the least.
In English class......oh and history class.....math, science......oh damn I ruined a lot of silver dollars with my pocket knife. I grew up in Nevada in the 50's and 60's and we used silver dollars in everyday transactions. Great to keep me awake during those boring classes. You will find my X's some W's and a few L's here and there. Think of me.

It looks as if the intersecting lines were applied at different times (could be just the picture lighting)... If so, someone saw the first mark and 'improved' upon it with the second....Just a guess... Cheers, RickO
