Another fun day at the Pawn Shop!!

So things started off sort of busy with a few customers at the Pawn desk, a few looking at coins/jewelry and another at the "Chair" doing a deal with my boss. I hear the door chime and in walks two guys who seem a little jumpy and too anxious, they're looking to sell three NIB X-Box controls. I told them no sale but they pressed so I walked them to the Pawn counter for confirmation. "No, we don't take controls or games, just the Game System itself" they were politely told. Fran was then told she was evil, among a few other choice words and we got MF'd as they walked out the door!!!
The Pawn Business is exciting and entertaining some days, this looks like it'll be a nice day!!

I can't even imagine the mix of people you meet every day.
Cliffnotes OP version = They walked in with controls and left loosing control.
...Again, I thought you retired and if not then when?
Question. I'm ignorant on game boxes. if I have 4 controllers, can 4 people play with the same X-box game at the same time? How many controllers come w/a new X-box?
So, wouldn't a NIB controller have any value at all? No demand for them? Even so, they must be worth $5 @. When I worked in a coin shop, I made an offer for anything that walked in the door. That's why my curiosity and question.
I hope the rest of your day has a little less drama. I don't think I would do well in customer service any more. Too many people like that to deal with. Props to you for being able to.
The way the original post was written made me think the controllers were stolen and the shop was doing it’s best to not get into trouble or a confrontation.
The HIGH POINT of my life was QUITTING coins and pawn in 2003.
Get back to work Chumley.
No Way Out: Stimulus and Money Printing Are the Only Path Left
Hope they don't come back.
Only the system itself? That doesn't make much sense, if someone comes in to buy a system they might want some extra controllers too.
Collector, occasional seller
Hope they don't come back.
believe it or not, the same two guys came into the shop around 1:45-2:00 while Francine was out getting our lunch. I was working the Jewelry counter at the time when they came in with what looked like a 32" FlatScreen in a box. I stopped them short and told them we didn't want them in the store, they left without saying anything, actually held the door open for another customer. who knows........................
aside to U1Chicago --- you are very perceptive.
The way the OP was worded (two jumpy guys) made me think the same thing. Guys working in pawn shops are probably very good at picking up on the "clues" folks give off. Now back to my question. I should think that the items were worth "something" and I think a pawn shop may need to "log" purchases (perhaps only on some things) and pay by check so the seller can be tracked. The shop may even be required to hold anything (?) they buy.
If these questions are answered it will possibly be revealing.
What's a controller worth?
You raise another interesting question. These day's, I'll bet the two guys could get a lawyer to sue the shop for discrimination! What a world we live in.
Do you all have heat strapped to your sides? They better call you "Sir".
I don't carry but there are at least three weapons in plain sight on my bosses desk and propped up behind him.
Many coin shops I've been in in certain states could pass as gun stores w/all the "heat" around.
@keets said: "I don't carry..."
It will make your "thingy" bigger. LOL.
I really wish you would but it is a personal decision.
Careful taking their word that "something" is in the box. It was popular in Europe to show an item outside the box. You got to look at a fabulous high dollar item and they would use the line you were getting a great price and they would point to the nice new box all sealed up and weighted accordingly and when the victim opened the box later on it was basically a rock in a box.

I don't think there is enough money to make me want to be in the pawn business.
But if I were I'd be open carrying a 45 in plain view. You cannot be too careful these days.

I'd also have a gun in my boot, one in my pocket, and the small one attached to the belt buckle.
OK, here's what just happened, you can't make this up.
a woman comes into the store, she has some sort of Buddhist head-dress on and she's carrying, holding by a string, some sort of large, round medallion that looks like a cross between a Peace Sign and ying/yang. she's asking my boss about a Marilyn Monroe picture she saw in the store a while ago. they go back and forth, the woman leaves and comes back 10 minutes later.
this time she talked to my co-worker for about 10 minutes and left her contact info and a note that claims she's the re-incarnation of Norma Jean and can prove it!!!
wow, come on 6 o'clock.
Now that's worth following up in person if she is pretty!
Sounds like we have the making of a reality TV show.

What did your security guard say? What state is the Jurisdiction? Just wondering. Are you allowed to carry for protection on the job / city / Employee rules?
Or maybe you work in a gun free zone which would relieve me knowing only Law Enforcement is there to protect me.
Sounds like a normal day in the life of a Correctional Officer. Dealing with stupidity is the norm.
Wow.... Heck of a day Al...Everything from possibly 'hot' material to reincarnation.... My day at the shooting range has some interesting encounters, but nothing like your day. Cheers, RickO
Maybe she’ll come back tomorrow with some nice Joe DiMaggio memorabilia to sell you.
They should spice up the "PAWN STARS" show with stuff as this,
What a crazy world we live in !!!
They are out there. A few years ago, in Dallas, while eating lunch in a fast food restaurant, I noticed a late model Oldsmobile, 4 door, pull in, and a woman, maybe mid upper 50's gets out. Typical grandmother looking type, but something is not right, but I cannot see due to obscured vision. When she placed her order, and came and sat down, I realized her head was wrapped in foil, like a helmet.
No CIA or aliens reading her thoughts that day.
I have reason to periodically to out to Terlingua. Most of it is absolute God Forsaken desolation. The rest of it is far worse. That is where people go who officially have dropped out of society. It is not a town to mess with the locals, as there is a lot of desert to hide the bodies.
to all you members who think someone needs to be armed to the teeth with a Howitzer to work the counter, it is probably a good thing you don't work a counter.
How much good material do you pick up coin wise?

It’s not a good thing to have people with guns in public situations where they may not be trained to do so those little guys that come out don’t have brains they just go anywhere pointed easy for bystanders to get hit huge liabilities

a few minutes till we open the doors. things are usually busy on Fri-Sat but it would have to be really spicy to top yesterday.
Show her a picture of Albert Einstein and ask her how it makes her feel.
The majority of "carry permit" holders in this country have brains, are patriotic, and know the history of this country and why the second amendment exists. They would do fine behind the counter. Others who do not believe in weapons of any kind also fit into this category. The choice to carry is personal. I do not envy you being out in the open and working in a pawn shop. I'll add you to my daily prayers I recite on my drive to work. You are an asset to CU that I should hate to lose.
PS Remember the "Where's Keets" thread. We love you.
Must be spring. Bro'mance is blooming...
Your day is getting more interesting!
