Nice find I alway pull out the pre 1960s
A 77 year old coin in change ... yet no numismatic value. How things have changed in the past 50-60 years. Can you imagine getting a 77 year old coin in change (except silver dollars) back in the early 1960s?
You are so right.
value isn't a issue with me if a coin gets my notice it's collected plain and simple

good eye
That is awesome! I never found a 42 D in the wild before. Even worn like that it should command a small premium, $5-$10
Coingratulations

Melt vale is $.90. Value is under melt, I'm pretty sure.
Still a cool find.
It is not silver. The 42 D is from before the composition change. Small mint mark to right of base of Monticello
42 D is one of the key dates for Jefferson Nickels along with 39D 39S. 50D is low mintage also and has a circulated premium.
The silver nickels have a larger mintmark directly above the peak of Monticello

It took ,me a couple of years of constant roll searching to pluck an example for my Whitman, crazily enough I have found probably 15-16 '39-Ds and only one '50-D from roll searching, but as of now only a couple of '42-Ds.
Nice find, congratulations !!!
Very very tough date to find in circulation.
Much tougher than a "war" nickel.
The coin also seems to have escaped being hit with rolling machine damage during all these years.
Very nice find and an exceptional year I will also pull these old nickels from change.... Cheers, RickO
