America the Beautiful 5 oz silver

My 28 year old son currently is collecting the $5 commutative gold set and now wants to start collecting a new silver or gold set but can't decide what has the "most potential" long term... he's going with me to the Baltimore show next week and wants to start purchasing his new collection then...

This weekend he went to a local coin show and spoke to one of the deals for about 30 minutes. The dealer suggests that he should collect the America the Beautiful 5 oz. silver set because in 2020 when the set is over people will then start looking to make the set. I don't know much about them except that there are 2 different versions of the (investor & collector) set.

Can anyone help him/me and tell me which one (investor & collector) is better long term?
And if you have a better idea of a set for him to collect that might help him also.
Thank you in advance...

    stick with gold.
How about a set of $5 gold with all the mintmarks? Not many coins and would be a fun set to start.

I don't know what sort of budget he has an $18 year old, but it will be nearly 300 ounces of silver for the full set. Even at spot, that is a pretty big chunk of change, and many of the issues trade at multiples of spot even for the bullion versions. Though he is talking about a gold set, so maybe he has a lot of money saved up. I personally think the 5 oz pucks are cool and collect the bullion version.

If he is looking for an investment with the "most potential" long term, I'd recommend an index fund. If he is looking to collect for fun then that is a different question and what interests him should drive that.

I also know that the financial situations of early adults can change quickly (college, car, house, marriage, etc.), and depending on the details he may also want to keep in mind liquidity and transactions costs if he needs to quickly raise funds.

18 year old me probably would have tried to put together a lower end pre'65 Washington quarter set. Most can be had for spot and would be an easy but fun set to finish as even the few keys are still fairly inexpensive. But that's on a whole different level.

As far as an investment... I really do not recommend coins.... Bullion goes up and down...so potentially, buying and selling at the right times can make a return.... Modern sets may or may not appreciate significantly... These things come and go in popularity. Cheers, RickO

I've collected both the bullion set and the collector set of 5 oz ATBs and although I do like them, my observation is that interest in these has declined over time, both graded and ungraded - which probably doesn't bode well for them as "an investment". They are bulky and require a lot of space. On the other hand, if he can pick up most of them raw and in decent condition at small premiums, all it might take is one bull market in silver to create a robust demand. The short answer is to collect what you enjoy.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

My son said he has decided that he's going to collect the bullion version. Now he's trying to decide if he wants to buy them raw or graded...

They can be bought for the same price raw or graded.
