Now they steal bonsai!
Some trees sell for $250k and a million isn't unheard of.

I had no idea they could sell for anything close to those amounts! I wonder who makes up the market for stolen bonsai.
Often stamp collectors that have branched out.
Caring for bonsai is another form of meditation if you will ...... in a Zen garden without the uuuuuhhhhmmmmm
Sucks that anything could be stolen ...... and bonsai thieves have no conscience
Part of the cost is for the styling. The tree in the million dollar link is most likely a Japanese White Pine.

Each of what looks like "tufts" is a styled branch. EACH branch is wired to style with thread-thin wire and the process on a tree like that would take days or a week or more. This is a far less complex wiring on a pine.
Plus....each of those ends that are wired are....UNWIRED... after a season or so. And then RE-wired for style.
Mine aren't anywhere near that class. And I ..choose..trees that don't require such complex preparation.

Juniper
SCOTS pine.... way easier to work with.

Nothing surprises me after some chef in Asia paid millions for a blue fin tuna
I am surprised that no security dogs barked.......and that the thieves didn't leaf any evidence. Still, I imagine the owners are pining for their return, but their wherabouts remain a mystree.
They didn't leaf any evidence. No dog bark either. I hope they can get to the root of this matter.
Investigators so far are stumped.
Here's one of mine that I forgot to wire one day:
Yeah, but these trees were BIG. I don't think the thieves will get fir.
The gypsies are "branching" out

You guys are real punny.
I wish we wooden have to be.
I think bonsai trees are cool. I tried to grow on once out of a kit I bought from Barnes and noble. The seed never grew so I gave up.
I love bonsai.
Remodeling my back yard, I insisted on some space for a small bonsai garden.

Getting out on a limb are you all?

Just ran two gypsies out of the shop today. They pulled the same stunt as the last two who came in. M.O. was to flash a wad of cash, asking for silver, etc., ...
Then I called Dave, at DSS up the street, to warn them. Sorry, I didn't mean to bark here.
I'll post their ugly mugs, if you want.

If copper wire is used, and electricity run through it, magnetic fields will alter the tree's growth pattern.
The late wife was given a nice bonsai pine once. She couldn't be bothered to water it twice a day. "Fortunately, what came back [from a weekend] didn't live very long."
Quite a case, I'm stumped!
Everything I know about bonsai is from The Karate Kid...
Smitten with DBLCs.
There are some incredible Bonsai trees... Truly works of living art. I have often admired them at plant shows.... thought about trying it myself, but really lean more to more active pursuits. Cheers, RickO
I am familiar with the Bonsai collection at Longwood Gardens. A tree I had first seen in 1976 on a college field trip had hardly changed when I saw it again in 2016. I wish I could the same about myself.

I would like to see if it matches the guy I tracked down of Facebook. PM me if you would.

I wonder how old the highest priced one is! I bet it's 1-200 years old!
LOL

Yup, here in Hawaii, there are a lot of Japanese families and many bonsai tree collectors and clubs. In the past few years, there has been a rash of bonsai trees thefts !!!
Police are stumped. They are especially needled by the loss of the pines.
Sacramento, I’m shocked!!! Not (I live 25 miles from Sac).
And please folks, don't pronounce it "Bonz-Eye", it's "Bone-Sigh".
And it isn't "Banzai" either.
