Did you order your Apollo coin(s) today ?

TwoSides2aCoinTwoSides2aCoin Posts: 45,026 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was asked by a collector if I was ordering. I told him no, but I like the gold, so just maybe.

Yep-got what I wanted. A little slow at first but actually kinda easy after about 45 seconds.

Yeah, the site was a little slow. Figured it was due to the cold weather and not global warming, this time.

I got the email confirmations but having trouble getting to print the first order that had the puck in it. I'll keep trying. Bag showed the right number of items at check out and order shows correct dollar amount.

I ordered one each of the silver offerings. Will go back soon for clad.

Will skip the gold. The only modern gold I got was the unc. baseball HOF, thinking it would have a much lower mintage than the proof. I was right, but the demand was not there so value has been flat.

Agreed with the lack of interest and demand on modern commemorative gold coins , JBK. I think it may take another 100 years to see any actual interest in such (as markets go)

Got a gold proof. Buy mostly gold now. Really like the look of the gold proof, and could not come to terms with the puck premium.

No, but I think it has a much better chance of being popular with collectors. Financially, don't know.

Nope. I don't go to the usmint site anymore. They lost me for life.

IF I decide to buy any of these (I do like Apollo and the designs) I will buy one already in a holder after the hype dies down.

    silver proof.

I almost always ignore commemoratives, but as a kid in the 60s I followed the space program closely, and this coin has a really nice design.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

I went for the gold because it's the golden anniversary. Silly reason, I suppose.

Can't handle the mint premiums. Usually tend to wait a year and pickup at or near spot metal value. Like the design so sure I will purchase on down the road and at much lower prices.

Yeah. One proof gold coin. I've always thought the 5 oz pucks were ridiculous in any format since they look more like hubcaps than coins.

I dunno. I'll probably keep this as I'm a HUGE Apollo fan. I'm debating on the uncirculated gold coin. I'm not so much a US Mint fan these days.

Got the half set, puck on back order, no problems with the site

No. And by doing so I was able to avoid the:
    A) Rush
    B) Frustration of the Mint system
    C) Indigestion at the noon hour
    D) Paranoia of when the coins will arrive
    E) Disappointment of not being able to flip them for a large profit

    Life is good.

Just placed a back order for the 5 ozer. Too bad US mint does not make any 10 oz and up, or else we can all brag about owning a silver dollar size of moon. ;)

These will probably have a high mintage and in a few years will be little more than more modern US Mint melt bucket material. Why pay a big premium over melt for such an item? Just wait a few years and buy then if you still find them interesting.

    All glory is fleeting.

Is mint product helping the hobby? I wonder. When it comes time to sell, I'd bet most are extremely disappointed. Think proof sets.

Grew up with model rockets and went to space camp as a kid, attended a shuttle launch in Florida, have worked in aerospace industry for last decade, have a big lego version of the Saturn V.

Im not unique. There must be millions of "fans" of the US space program. I am going to figure out a way to display my puck, maybe just a simple desktop stand for the mint capsule. "Time to sell" will probably be for my heirs, hopefully after the 100th apollo anniversary so I get a chance to show off my 50 year old commems!

But I do hope the pucks bring a premium in the next few weeks, because I bought 4 extras to offset my cost on the keepers. B)

    No, not in my opinion.

There is too much product and it is negative for pricing in two ways.

First, the price falls in the secondary market for a variety of reasons because the real collector demand is below the supply. So the buyers from the US Mint lose money.

Second, when collectors buy it, they have less discretionary funds to buy other coins due to budget limitations. Absent an increase in collector budgets (if it is an option) or an increasing collector base, this means that the US Mint is almost certainly reducing sales and prices of other coinage, primarily US coins due to the buyer profile.

Since they are curved I will refer to the pucks as "flying saucers".

I got one for myself. No flipping, and I am glad as I think flippers might end up crash landing on this issue.
