Have you ever received or unknowingly tried to spend counterfeit currency/coins?

Other than the aggravation and or humiliation, what happened next?

I feel like there is a back story here.
No
No back story, it's just that every time you buy something they seem to be checking for counterfeit bills, there must be a bunch of them circulating out there.

Received...after the fact. While counting down the daily drops at the car parts store, I spotted an apparently fake $50. From a distance of approx. 13 feet, it just did not look right; washed out and ill-defined. Upon closer inspection the feel was not there, neither were some of the security features, watermark of Grant, security thread, microprinting and the gold 50's on the reverse were just blobs. There was a counterfiet pen mark (from the original photocopied note) which probably threw the receiving cashier off. oh yeah, comparison images;
And apparently the size is a skosh smaller...or is it permissible to display/post counterfeit/autherntic currency images?

Same.
Except once.... a gal tried to buy a gold eagle with fake $50 dollar bills in my shop. I called the police. They picked up one guy who was driving the car, and put him in jail. Then, strangely, the dude died in jail the next day. I heard this through the grapevine. (knowing a few Law Enforcement people)

Yes, we owned a hardware store years ago (70's) and received a $100 that was a fake. Obviously I did not take it (employee). Bank would not accept when put through the night deposit. Got a call next am to come get. I was pissed to say the least. They called the Feds and gave me the bill back.
In talking to my acct later that day I mentioned what had happened and he was also my Insurance agent. No problem said he. State Farm covers counterfeits in the policy. Wrote me a check for $100.
Next week Secret Service showed up and wanted the bill, and all info regarding how and when we got it. Had no clue, gave it to them and told them no clue.

Oh yeah, there were a couple counterfeit Morgans I forgot about, too. Fool me once... and I'm labeled a fool for life.

Unknowingly? I don't know.

Knowingly purchased currency and vintage counterfeits. Passing them is illegal.
not that I know of
About 50 years ago I received a "Henning" nickel in change. Since I hated counterfeits I took a hammer and effectively destroyed it. I have never received any counterfeit paper money though I now look more closely as I understand that a great deal of it is being offered for sale on the dark web. There was a story about this on our local TV news this past week. An individual who was caught passing such dark web notes was sent to prison for 18 months. The notes involved in this case were 20's.
+1
I might have gotten a fake 2 euro coin in change once. Still have it somewhere, need to scrutinize more closely at some point.
There's a gas station/quick shop nearby that scrutinized and marks EVERY bill, even singles.
Annoying as hell.
One day I was feeling like a smart a** and brought my own counterfeit detection pen and stood there and marked the bills they gave me back as change.
I thought it was funny.
The clerk looked at me as if I was a nut, lol!
Several years ago I was given a fake Washington quarter in change. Evidently made from cast zinc or tin.
Why don't they ever counterfeit $2 bills? Nobody knows what they're supposed to look like anyway.

I assume slot machines are set up to look for them.
There is a Travel America stop near the Iowa Minnesota border on I-35. They have a little machine they run the bills thru to check.
The only time I received a counterfeit was inheriting it from my grandfather 50 years ago. An 1872-CC dime - sheeez, I wished that one had been real! Anyway, I still have it as a family memento.
There is even some collecting interest in contemporary counterfeits, apparently. This website shows many of them - this link will take you to 1872-CC dimes that look very similar to mine:

Bought a bunch of Morgan Dollars a few years back at a yard sale (yeah, I know what you are going to say). Anyway, I went to a coin show and the dealer goes through them and tosses one back. "That one is counterfeit". It became a pocket piece for when I go to the casino.

Received a counterfeit 10,000 Chilean Peso note just a few months ago. Didn’t realise it was fake until I tried to spend it. Now a souvenir...
Smitten with DBLCs.
Working in retail grocery mgmt, we saw them all the time. Once, when someone attempted to buy money orders with a dozen or so counterfeit $100's, we called the PD. When the officxer came, he looked at them, then asked why we thought they were fake. I told him, besides the obvious poor quality, they all had the same serial #. Really an LOL moment, before that was a thing.
No.
Not a counterfeit Bill but I did date a Patricia who had some counterfeit parts.
I'd like to buy an omega saint if I could find one at the right price.
To answer your question, No, although we did make several at the printing shop to see how well we could do.
(I worked as a plate maker & press operator when I was young)
We did so well it was frightening and we destroyed them ALL with FIRE as well as the custom ink & film.

Remember back in the day when we had telephone books? The white pages would pass the iodine test from the counterfeit pens. The pen contains an iodine based chemical that detects whether the paper is fabric base or wood pulp base. If the bill is counterfeit a dark brown mark will appear. Otherwise, the mark will remain an amber color.
But the pages were too thin, Hmmmm...A little bit of glue and some bleach...
Nope, not that I'm aware of !!!
I tried to buy some pastries (deux pains au chocolat) in Paris a couple of years ago and handed the lady what I thought should be the correct change. She handed me back what I thought was a 2 Euro coin, but it was actually some similar-looking low-value foreign coin a street vendor had (knowingly?) passed to me earlier in the day. I didn't care so much, but it was the last change I had on me and it got a little uncomfortable as I dug through my bag to find something else she'd take.
This sort of thing happens easily enough in places where coins still have some value.
YES! just bought one a few days ago Counterfeit 1837 Bust half made into Love token Ex. Russ Logan.
I found a contemporary counterfeit Seated quarter with my metal detector many years ago. Pissed me off to no end.
Not that I know of.
No currency or coin that I received.... I did buy a counterfeit CC Morgan at the antique shop... I knew it was fake (none made that date)... just to get it off the shelf...and I registered it with the counterfeit site. Cheers, RickO
I knowingly bought a key date counterfeit Morgan once for a conversation piece. (Still have it). Bought a counterfeit 16d dime once and when I got it back in a body bag from PCGS, I was lucky enough to get my money back from the dealer that sold it to me.
Found this in a pile of "junk" silver much later after my purchase.
