I acquired this 1988 Texas silver round at the Houston Money Show today. It's struck from 1oz silver round dies on some kind of brass planchet that's smaller in diameter than the actual round is. It also has a massive strike-thru. Looking on eBay, the silver rounds themselves are collectible, selling around 2x spot. Does anyone have any info on these rounds? Also, any theories on how/why this happened? These are cell phone images- I'll post better ones when I get home tomorrow.

Added: Weight is exactly .5 OZ

Yup, they ran out of real estate on that puppy. Do we know who minted it? And if there was a limited run? Curious. I'm sure more info is forthcoming. Stay tuned.

Likely a quick test piece made on a scrap blank.

    This makes sense.

That’s great! I’m a fan of test pieces and wrong planchet pieces.

This looks looks like a silver specimen of what you have. Would be great to find out more about this piece, including the issuer and designer/engraver.

Neat item. Is the strike thru raised or sunken in? Looks raised to me.

I see it now. Darn optical illusions.

I recall seeing silver pieces of this design.... at coin shows in the PNW.... almost bought one, but at the time, was looking for a Texas commemorative. So kept looking. (I did get the commem... actually a couple of them ;) ) Cheers, RickO
