Why are there so many numbers?

It takes that many to make that big number.

Seriously? Does it take that long to post a clear picture with a somewhat precise question? I mean, if you're really interested? Think about it.

I totally remember the "NO P" (No Mintmark) 1983 quarter fade of the early to mid 80's. These were selling for up to 200 dollars for a coin that ended up being run up by promoters. Thanks for the memory OP. Not that your quarter is one of them.

You are just seeing dirt and grime. The numbers you "see" between 1983 are just illusions caused by the dirt and grime.

There are only four numbers there... the 'appearance' of others is due to accumulated grime... the phenomena is known as Pareidolia.... Cheers, RickO

Look at the surfaces of the coin itself.

What you're seeing is NP = Numismatic Pareidolia

Yes, I see it. 1867/1983. Clear as can be.....get it graded by PCGS as an overdate, asap, and then send me a PM to buy it.
