Would anyone care to speculate on what implement is shown in the pic?

    Some sort of comms apparatus? Appears the soldier has an AN/PRC-77 on his back.

    @ricko or @Namvet69 may know.

    FRO for sure. Looks like the glass rim has soot or other residue on rim.

    I was reluctant to post this. And I hope I'm wrong. If not the mint goofed big time.

    @mapleman Interesting. Cannot find the reference photo on the US Mint’s website. What is the URL for that pic?

    Here is the other Army medal.

    Thanks @mapleman, been on that page and must have scrolled right past. I think I will pose the question of the source/history of the pic to the PR/CS folks at the mint, or least try to.

    @Hemispherical
    I think that's a fine Idea. If I'm correct, as I believe, it demeans/mocks the Army. Others may but I for one won't criticize the soldiers/Marines in country.

    The medal for the "Women Airforce Service Pilots" on the same US Mint webpage shows an airplane with "Pistol Packin Mama" painted on it.

    image

    "Pistol Packin' Mama" was a popular song of the 1940's.

    By the way, it was one of my grandmother's favorite songs.

    FWIW

    This is the caption for the original background photo.

    “US Army Patrol in Paddy Field, 1968 A patrol of US soldiers from the 9th Division in a leech infested rice paddy field in the Tan An Delta, Vietnam 1968. | Location: Tan An Delta, Vietnam. (Photo by © Tim Page/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)”

    “WASP (from left) Frances Green, Margaret Kirchner, Ann Waldner and Blanche Osborn leave their B-17, called Pistol Packin' Mama, during ferry training at Lockbourne Army Air Force base in Ohio. They're carrying their parachutes.

    And the song with Bing and the Andrew Sisters:

    Thanks all, good to read the history of some of the background photos. Would be much easier if the contractor the Mint is using to sell these commemoratives put some details about the background photos.

    Or perhaps, courageously served. :)
