Rev exergue is really uneven, the clad layer is all there but not smooth. Bad planchet before the strike? Don't think it's a strike thru cause the letters are not affected. Obv is fine. Let me know, thanks. Peace

What is an "exergue"?
Looked it up:
ex·ergue
/ekˈsərɡ,eɡˈzərɡ,ˈeksərɡ,ˈeɡzərɡ/Submit
noun
noun: exergue; plural noun: exergues
a small space or inscription below the principal emblem on a coin or medal, usually on the reverse side.
"A small space or inscription below the principal emblem on a coin or medal, usually on the reverse side."
I had to look that up too -- good grief
I guess school is in session! A lesson in coin terminology disguised as an innocent "is this an error thread".
I am a scrabble afficionado and ya gotta know lots of words with x's in them in order to win. Besides that's what the coin background is called. There's gonna be a quiz later.

Thanks PF - now what is the yellow stuff? Ureeen?
Seriously, was hoping there would be an expert opinion here by now (prolly all over at the drinks thread) -- it's a curious defect.
Ditto on scrabble. It' a keeper.
Soak it in acetone and see what happens.
Looks like defective planchet....on older coins it would be rusted dies... Cheers, RickO
Looks to be a slightly mis-aligned die to begin with. The coin has a rough surface probably due to a worn overused die.
I think that is what you're asking. This is what an exergue looks like on a Buffalo Nickel. The denomination was protected from premature wear by putting it in an "exergue".
Pete
I soaked it in acetone, the green waxy goo is gone, nothing else changed. I agree with defective planchet. Thanks all and Happy New Year

So the extragoo came off the exergue?
Yes, yes it did. Goo be gone. Wife and I are watching Springstein on Hollywood on Netflix and he is superb. Do yourself a favor cause it's a free concert. Happy New Year
