Large Cents for Type Set

I am looking for some recommendations on where and how to buy my Classic Head and Draped Bust Large Cents for my type set. My target grade is VF30 or VF35 in a PCGS holder and my budget is around 1K for each coin. I want a coin that is problem free and straight graded with original surface. If you know a go to dealer for large cents, please let me know. I been looking on eBay for about 6 months and most of the coins have issues or overpriced. I been watching GC and not much of a selection of large cents.

If you want find the coin fairly quickly, I would go to a copper coin specialist. You will probably pay a premium. If you want name, I would say "Victor-MaCally."
The other dealers can get good coins from time to time, but it might take longer. I remember that I missed out an EF-45 1812 large cent that Gary Adkins had a coupld years ago because I did not pull the trigger fast enough. Gary Adkins is now associated with David Lawrence RC. JJ Teaparty also gets nice coins of that vintage.
You might want to stretch your budget out $200 to $300 for the right coin. When you locate the piece that pleases, sometimes it's good not to be penny wise and pound foolish.
I am assumming that you want to buy this piece for the long haul. If you are looking for a fast turnover, getting the right a cheap price would be a very hard thing to do. These coins are not common in the problem free grades.
I am looking at a long term purchase and in no hurry to find the right coin.
The first name that popped into my mind was Tom Reynolds from Nebraska. The classic head in the grade and quality that you are looking for is a tough coin but you will be very happy if you find the right coin.
Sorry but just wanted to correct this. His name is Chris Victor-McCawley.
That’s fine. I have never been able to spell.
I have purchased large cents from all the dealers listed in the previous posts and have been happy with the results.
The 1802 and 3 cents make good type examples and can be located without too much difficulty. If you want to make it more interesting, consider a 1798 cent for an example.
The classic head is one of the stoppers when building a problem free type set. If you find a nice one that meets most of your criteria, grab it.
Edited to add- Shawn Yancey and Doug Bird also carry lots of better large cents, but many of their offerings are raw, and you did specify PCGS....but you can still check them out.
Good luck from looking in the registry I stated at VF30 and can't hit your buget figure even with the lower prices lately.
I have been looking for the same coins for my set and just can't seem to find one I am willing to pay that much for either.
Tom Reynolds (Omaha), Doug Bird (Hermosa, CA), Shawn Yancey (Springfield, MO), and Chris Victor-McCauley (Texas) (sp?) all carry a full range of Large Cents. Hannigan is way over my head (and most people's), and Colonel (?) I forget his name (Maryland?) is also a specialist with some good material. I've dealt with DLRC, but not for Large Cents - but I would expect good material there also.
You will be paying a premium no matter where you go, so it's more important to really appreciate the coin before you buy.
I knew it would happen.
Colonel Steve Ellsworth- yes, I should have mentioned him in my post.
if you want a choice VF with nice surfaces as you said in your post, unless things have changed drastically I would say $1000 won't do it
Chris is the man with the coins you want!! I've been dealing with him for years..
I third the motion for Tom Reynolds. I seek him out at Baltimore. I purchased my Draped Bust LC, Coronet LC, and Classic Head HC from him. JJTeaparty is also good, in general, for type collectors. I almost pulled the trigger on a 1812 Classic Head in 35 at the Spring 2018 Baltimore Show... I just didn't quite have the $$.
I don't think he's been mentioned yet, but Tom Deck runs a website devoted to Early Coppers. He has links to the vendors mentioned above and also has a fixed price list too... Happy Hunting!!
