A seldom seen 2-feathers Buffalo nickel (at least by me)

OnWithTheHuntOnWithTheHunt Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭✭✭

Have been hunting Buffalo varieties for nearly 20 years but this is only the second one of this date/mm I've seen since 2005. Passed the first time because there was too much of the small feather visible, even though it was an UNC. coin, but picked this one a week before Christmas. It finally arrived today. It also appears to be a No Designer Initial and has some strike doubling on the lips and chin. A few marks on the obverse but a keeper for me. Grade it if you want.

Think that Koynekwest has documented 27 different.

Great find! That's one of the toughest ones.

There are 20 of what I call "true two feather" dates that show no trace of the feather plus 10 more "2+ feather" varieties that show a tiny part of the feather but have been traditionally slabbed as two feather coins.

Good one! EF-45 in my opinion.

Very nice find.... I have one that has slightly more... doubt it would get the designation, but it sure is faint. Cheers, RickO

    OnWithTheHunt,
After reading your post I recalled having found a similar coin. Dug it out and yes, it is a 2 feather, no F, 1913 S T1.
This is my first post with a photo so it might not be the best. Photo makes the coin appear cleaned (in my opinion) but it is not. It was part of a large hoard of several thousand raw, unattributed buffalos I purchased several years ago.

I agree it is XF45, but would the pmd on the reverse N in CENTS stop it from grading? And yes Jetstream your second coin does appear cleaned in the photo.

Agreed Ron. It is indeed a nice coin. It's got mint luster and light wear.

    I'm gonna say AU-53, maybe even AU-55.

Nice one Jetstream. To me, few things could beat going through an old horde of unattributed Buffalos and finding a tough variety in that shape. BTW, an attributed PCGS-30 of this one just sold for $150 on ebay.

That's a pretty solid number which shows not only interest in the variety but a strong pricing for it.
