You don't know him. Neither do I. He is the unheralded collector with more holes in his Whitman folder than coins. He has never attended a major show or joined an online forum. The Heritage auctioneer has never peered deeply into the crowd and given Ernie an extra few seconds to decide on a cut bid.

No, Ernie has collected in anonymity since he bought a US coin price guide for a quarter at the Kroger checkout. He has plucked his collection from pocket change and went to his reward fuming about the 1965 changeover to clad coinage.

Ernie never owned a VDB Lincoln Cent, with or without the "S". His few Morgan Dollars were smoother than a 16 year old scotch. he could only guess the dates on His Buffalo nickels.

We lose a thousand Ernie's each day.

The hobby mourns.

100 years ago, many Europeans would change the spelling of their name to be more "Americanized". I wonder if Ernie's collecting would be more notable if he had dropped two letters in his surname to Slabinowitz ;)

    Interesting thoughts - :+1:

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. An excellent point... a tribute to those who collect in quiet anonymity, from change and rolls, probably never even seeing a slabbed coin. These collectors, young and old, are the essence of our hobby. Cheers, RickO

No one is lost or forgotten, they live in us, our collections, passion, and how we enjoy this thing. Carry on. Peace Roy
