Buy the plastic - not the coin: the Regency holder

So, I was perusing the cool (to me anyway) history of holdering slabs produced by PCGS on their website that have been used over the years and saw this holder at the end. It piqued my interest because I had never seen it before in any venue where coins are sold.
Anybody have any coins graded with the Regency holder?

I think I'd call it the bathroom scale holder.
I recall them ending that offer around 1995. The most commonly found coins in them are from Israel and the Danny Kaye estate.

The regency holders are scarce but out there. I seem to recall Great Collections having auctioned a few in the past. Every now and then one will pop up on eBay.
There is one on eBay now:

Most of them held coins from the Danny Kaye collection of Israeli 5 Lirot coins. I had a few of those. GC offered about 4 Regency holders a couple weeks ago. Modern gold eagles. Premiums were about $600-700 for the plastic as I recall.
I remember seeing a fair number of them with US coins in the late 1990's. At that time no one was paying much attention to the holder. In fact, many didn't like the holder because it would not fit into the standard PCGS box. The Danny Kaye estate Israeli coins assures that the holder itself will never be particularly rare. Kaye himself was apparently not a coin collector. The coins had been given to him as a thank you from Israel. I have heard that the Kaye estate rather than Kaye himself was responsible for the coins being slabbed in the Regency holders.
If I owned that coin it would go in for a reholder. I have no use for a holder like that.
U.S. coins in those holders, especially Morgans, go for Mars money (that's way past Moon money).
Every now and then there will be one in a Heritage sale. Like TomB said, most were Danny Kaye Israel coins. I think the last one I sold was an 1872 3c piece. I sold several 2c pieces in the Regency Holders.
I’ve never owned one, but I’ve seen a few in person before.
Odd, not particularly my favorite, but I’d have one just for the cool factor. (Cheaply of course).

But didn't the come with a felt bag to store them as they are pretty much the size of a box of 20!
Yes, they did originally come with a felt bag. I suspect that many of those felt bags are long gone and are now a collectible in their own right!
As most said here, the majority of Regency holders have the Danny Kay coins.

I have the complete set with green bag. I can’t find all the pics that show it but found the slab and
pics I took years back.
.
I try to watch any that show up for auctions and so far have not seen a toned one like mine.

I wouldn't. I would flip it for the plastic premium.
Nah, you wouldn't do that. Sounds good on paper but in real life you wouldn't bust it.
If it was a coin that I could easily replace I would too. But if it was a hard to find variety...…...crack crack.
Of course if it was an easy coin to find I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.
I’ll save you the trouble and give you the reholder fee plus guide for the coin and you can mail it to me.
I wonder what the value of a cracked empty regency slab would be? @Lakesammman
You are missing the point. The coin would be THE special thing here to me...….so crack crack.
And yes I would. I've cracked a black ngc. The is no holder worth more than the coin to me...….NONE!
You actually care about the coin ? That's heresy here.

What if it had a gold CAC sticker to boot?
Crack Crack!
It's better than the doily and rattler holders, but I agree it isn't comely.
I have one of the Danny Kaye coins, which came in a green felt box with a picture of him, as well. I have #76, which was the number of the bus I took every day to go to the airport the college summer when I took flying lessons.
This is what the pouch and Kaye boxes look like:
I owned a 81-S ms-65 toned beauty that said real color on the label. I know where it rest today also.

I care about the coin too. However you’re missing out by cracking. From the proceeds of selling that black NGC you cracked, you could buy multiple great coins. Plus you’re destroying history. Some of us like to have a piece of certification history. The black NGC for instance is much more rare than many of the coins in your or my collection.
If I recall correctly, I saw that coin in hand, as well.

I was watching GC last weekend on a 5 piece silver and gold set, auctioned individually. I would like to have a Regency holdered U.S. type coin.

This one, correct?
That 81-S Is Sweet! @Dimeman has gone crazy also!
These were not that popular when first available from PCGS. I think the big attraction was you could put in your own text line. The Double Die Reverse is placed on the holder by submitter not PCGS.
That would get you called some unsavory names, and lower any opinion others may have of you. It would remind one of a quote from Forrest Gump's mother.
And, as incorrectly written on the 1939 Canadian Dollar, Queen Elizabeth II DID NOT visit Canada - her mother, Elizabeth did.
Ever burned a $1,000 bill, because that is what you did. Actually, TWO of them!
how would you even crack a Regency? I mean that is an awful lot of tap-tap-tapping on those long edges. TOO much work; ugh
Table saw. No problem.
I guess some are take me wrong here. I don't go around buy up these holders that everyone loves here to simply crack them out.
But if I find a variety I need for any of my Dime Registry's and it is in a ngc black or regency holder.....I send them in as either a crossover or crack them out to get the attribution so I can put the coin in my set(s). And I have done so.....and will do again.

would that be "Stupid is as Stupid does" or another one???
stubbornness is a quality that can be an asset but as expressed in this thread is seems more like a handicap. why crack out a several hundred dollar coin from a perhaps several thousand dollar holder just to prove a point?? to each their own.
I had never seen a Regency holder in-hand prior to last week. we actually had a dealer come in with two not-so-often-seen Numismatic items --- one of the Danny Kaye Regency holders(absent box and pouch) and an HK-450 Wilson Dollar in an ANACS holder graded AU50. I made and we should know this week if his customer accepts.
I was surprised not only by the items but at the size of the Regency, it seemed smaller than I expected from all the online pictures. the dealer was surprised that I knew what he had even before I could see it --- I guessed Danny Kaye Israel coin.
If the coin is what I want, and it fits my aesthetic standards, I buy it. I do not seek out slab types...though I must admit, if I saw one of those Regency slabs, I would certainly stop and look at it. Quite impressive with the green and gold colors. Most other slab types discussed here do not interest me...may even have some of them in the recesses of my safe or other repository. Cheers, RickO
Cracking one of those out would be about as wise as scratching off a gold bean.

By the way.I bought that coin from the dealer who had it holdered in that holder. I actually have sold that coin twice. Wish I never did. But it does have a good home as I write this

You would still be able to verify the gold status on CAC website.
I looked up the 81-S toner cert # and PCGS calls the holder 'Standard', so there would not be a verification method for the holder.
This reminds me of my favorite recency holder!

As much as I like plastic, they are a nuisance to store - sold 7 of them in the last year. Only have 2 left, 2 versions of the Danny Kaye.
