Don't want no "fricksion" on my Proof coins

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,725 ✭✭✭✭✭

Reading through the Mint correspondence file for 1874 and there is a lot of mundane stuff, including orders for Proof sets and single coins. Here is the first page of an order for a Gold Proof set and other stuff:

and here is the second page saying that he was enclosing a small amount of old silver to be used to purchase a sturdy wooden box to ship them in to avoid "fricksion!"

and here is the purchaser's name as written on the outside of the filed letter

There are several letters in the file demanding that the Mint send out Proof sets C.O.D. Good luck with that today!

This may have been because there was some confusion as to what was in the sets and hence the price. I saw one letter from a buyer complaining that the set he had received had been missing the two cent piece and the silver three cents and half dime. Those denominations had of course been eliminated in 1873.

At least they didn't get any complaints that the coins didn't come back as 70's.

I wonder if anyone abused return privileges back then.

(Truthfully, I'd want good, fresh specimens, too... :D )

If Mr. Cleneay were alive today, I wonder if he'd be participating on this chat board? Maybe his name would be "Good&Fresh" and he'd be showing us pictures of his proof sets, in which case I can imagine that he and @SanctionII could trade coins!

These old letters, from private individuals and between business entities, demonstrate what a different world we live in now. I am old enough to remember the transitory period when manners and speech were important components of civilized discourse. Sad to see what we endure today. Cheers, RickO
