Obviously the NGC results are for coins that have been cracked and upgraded. Of the 1,427 coins in the group, fewer than a thousand remain in the original holders.

Nice looking coin you're considering. IMO, PCGS was very conservative on the SR coins as they had to guarantee the grade knowing they had been "conserved" elsewhere - again, no proof, just my opinion.

I gave you my "straight forward opinion" and in turn got bashed as a sleazy gold buyer and a weasel. Oh the humility. sure hope you don't decide to OVERPAY like apparently someone did. lol
OK, let me explain very slowly. There was a 63+ 1889-S Saddle Ridge $20 in the OP and you're "a player" at 1500 and 200 above your comfort level? What universe is that? You have a right to an opinion, but if you came up to me or anyone else with an offer like that for said coin, well...
I'm just going by the patterns you've exhibited in other threads. Guess that's how you get your jollies.
That would be Blitzdudes universe. I hate dirty silver just as much as I hate overpaying for coins. Not that hard to comprehend really. My point was 5, 10, or 20 years from now nobody will care about saddle ridge. Melt is about $1200. Personally I'd pay up $300 due to grade and date although I'd be much more comfortable only paying up $100. Go ahead and pay $6K, just remember 5 years from now when you are selling to me, the sleazy gold weasel for $1300 that I told you so. Peace.
I guess we can add fortune teller to your resume. NO ONE knows the future or what the price of those overpriced (now?), hyped coins in a fancy package will bring. There are new suckers entering the hobby all the time. Kagin's did a great marketing attempt. Suppose more are found in the area. Suppose the story is uncovered and it is unbelievably delicious. Years ago those CSA restrikes were in junk boxes. Now you can't get one for less than a hundred dollars. They also have a story. Just for laughs, let me play Devil's Advocate. Is there a premium on the Well's Fargo Saints offered years ago? I don't recall them having a box or brochure either.
That said, IMO they should bring what they grade and I would only pay a very small $XXX premium. As long as the premium holds to $XXXX, I'm never going to be interested in owning one.
I recently had an 1889-s $20 that was in an ngc ms63 holder and the coin was clearly from the saddle ridge hoard. The coin was a blazer and in my opinion one of the nicest $20 libs eye appeal wise I have ever seen- especially for the grade.
It was well worth the premium when I bought it and it immediately was sold when I showed it out.
That said, the premiums have dropped significantly on the date and that price tag is a whole lot in my opinion and no longer worth it.
I think it is a great story from the hiding of the coins to the find to the conservation to the grading to the marketing, and there are some lovely, high grade coins that were made available to the collecting public. That said, I was not in the market for gem 1889-S $20's (and the like) before the hoard, and I am not in the market for them after the hoard.
If this is the type of coin that you have been wishing for but they have been not available to you before, you should drop to your knees and give thanks (and perhaps a burnt animal offering) to the collecting gods for answering your prayers.

I’m sure the crack outs that upgraded have done well, but that also makes it hard to track.
Edit:
Oops, didn’t see Regulated’s post above, I basically said the same thing.
This is the one I would love to own one day.
