Attribution "PUP" needed - 1927 Lincoln Cent DDO, FS-01-1927-101

claychaserclaychaser Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭✭

I have a few rolls of circulated 1927 cents, and I want to check them for the doubled die obverse variety. The picures in the Cherry Picker's Guide show what I think is a slight doubling in the bottom of the B in LIBERTY. I looked at the pictures of the two coins in Coin Facts, and I really cannot see any spread in any of the letters.

Before I either go on with the hunt or just sell these as common circ 1920's cents, I am hoping someone will share the secret as to how to quickly distinguish a true DDO from just a normal and common coin.

Can anybody school me in how to hunt for these?

IMHO, if the coins in your roll are not XF and higher and you don't own a 30X hand lens or microscope, you'll be wasting your life! You'll appreciate this comment when you are an old man.

The images in Cherrypickers are the POP. The images on coin facts are virtually worthless. The only thing I could see was perhaps some doubling left on the "N" and a tiny bit of fatness in "Lib."

Great advise! I would not look at anything lower than AU58. Save your eyes for another day.

There is CCW doubling on IGWT, and noticeable doubling under L of LIBERTY.
Very, very minor doubling in date.
Your coin would need to be a VF or better, to pick any of them up, as @Insider2 stated.
Your rolls of circ 1927's would likely be G-VG so it may be wise to save those eyes and only inspect VF and up examples.
A lower grade would be very difficult to sell anyway.
In other words, not worth the labor.

Thanks Mannie. Dump questions: What does CCW stand for?

Counterclockwise, so the doubled image would show to the left of the deeper hubbed lettering.

There's a decent image of the1927 on copper coins website.
It is a wonderful resource for Lincoln varieties.

A quick look at the pops at PCGS show 30 total with 13 of those being mint state in all colors. Only 2 examples have been graded in red.

Thanks. I no longer own the coin but it made it into a PCGS 64 BN holder.

Wow... that is a very minor doubled die.... I would miss that on a casual review or if the cent had normal wear for that age....Cheers, RickO

I was lucky enough to find an unattributed 65+ about a year ago. The doubling is very minor, and the major pup are in LIB of Liberty and IGWT.

I really like copper coins that look like this.
    It's a beauty!
