Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week - 1971 DDO-001 DISCOVERY
Wow, I originally posed on this variety back in February 2012 after being discovered. Then again in December 2016. All these years gone by and not a whisper of another example surfacing. I find it quite incredible no one has found another example that has been publicized! Maybe when time comes for Cherry Pickers Volume 7, this one will get its due? This 1971 DDO-001 would be a killer addition to the Guide for the modern year varieties. A couple other modern varieties that I'm betting on are the 1968-D/D RPM-001 or the 1981-D DDR-001. Only time will tell and if I live that long to see the next edition!
As always, happy hunting!

Nice doubled die - what other
design elements show the DD?
Pretty cool looking variety there, BD!
My guess is that not many people are looking for this one yet, if it gets into the CPG that will change.
Thanks for posting it!
An authorized PCGS dealer, and a contributor to the Red Book.
That is a good looking DD.
Fred,
The doubling is pretty much isolated to LIBERTY into the STAR and slightly into the DATE. The rest of the obverse looks normal. James wiles has posted a few more nice pictures at VarietyVista website below.

That's a very nice Class II doubled die! And, as is typical for this class of doubled die it is seen on the lettering close to the rim. As Rich says-not many are looking for it yet and once it becomes more well known I'm sure more will be found.
Nice coin!!
I used to have several rolls of nice XF/ AU '71-P's I got from circulation in the '70's and early '80's.
Unfortunately I took them to the bank several years back.
'71-P rolls are very scarce.
This was known as early as 1973 and their premium soared. Usually scare rolls from the era were caused by poor quality but the '71 nickel was pretty well made generally. It just got overlooked.
Initially they got a nice premium but over the years mint sets got busted up and filled the demand for the rolls. Now it's back up to a $20 roll though most all will be from mint sets and mint sets don't contain the DDO.
Ohhh! That's a nice spread!
It's really helps that this example is a very early die state. My expectation is there are many, many more out there! The grade on this one is MS64. I'm going to find an MS66FS example..........someday!
It's a much earlier die state than the one pictured on Variety Vista-all in all a better example. Maybe James Wiles would be interested in photographing it.
The Stage A coin is the one above. Photos are in different lighting. All the colors on Variety Vista are on this coin.
Yay for Jefferson Nickels! Nice ddo

Well, that is a nice one.... I have a couple of ziploc bags of Jeffersons... next snow storm I will pull them out and check them. Cheers, RickO
Looking back 5 years ago to this post. I can't believe 5 years have gone by! I still look at many 1971s and have yet to find another nor have I heard of anyone else pulling one. Seems like this one should be in the next Cherry Pickers.........whenever the Seventh Edition Volume 1 is ever published. I am not holding my breath!
Happy Holidays
