It is supposed to depict Galveston Island. It is not an error.

This is the only one that has the island

  • 291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,451 ✭✭✭✭✭

In checking other photos of the Texas coin I find that you are right, they don't show the "island".

You may want to contact the people who publish the Cherrypicker books. It may prove to worth promoting as it could be called the Galveston Island variety.

Hawaii has a few, I think! As does Guam (does that count?) lol.

    Presumably a die chip, then.

    @Benito

The placement of the die chip (possible) is pretty cool. It does look like an island. Keeper.

Below is from CoinFacts for comparison

That's actually close to the real Galveston Is -- oh the irony! Nice find!

You need to find another identical coin. A die chip would not be considered a variety. Yes an error, but a minor one.

If it were easy then there would be minimal value to the endeavor. :)

I am new at searching how to look for other ones besides coin searching tanks

It appears to be a die chip..... a very coincidental placement though. I would keep that one - and search for others. Get some rolls of Texas quarters... Cheers, RickO

Though die chips are relatively common, and not worth much at all, the size and placement of this one could make it a 'desirable' one to quite a few as the 'Galveston Island' variety. I'd consider it a keeper and would try to find another to validate it. Looks like a nice find to me.

As a stand alone "error" it is neat but not very valuable, I assume. BUT...if you can hype it as the "Galveston Island variety:" it might catch on and they would be worth a premium. :p

The any one has one like that

"To validate it" ?? A die chip is a die chip, if it is a die chip. Finding another would be nice and beneficial to try to garner interst but isn't needed for validation of whether its a die chip.

Could it be a gas bubble? Or maybe Gilligan's island?

I think it's neat and would love to have one to show at our next coin club meeting. Then again, I'm in Texas, and we go nuts over stuff like this! LOL

Edited to add ... @Benito ... any chance you could post a nice, high resolution image of the full reverse? :)
