New Multi-coin Holder

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,309 ✭✭✭✭✭

Maybe this is old news and I'm out of touch, but PCGS Asia recently announced a multi-coin holder for sets. Anyone think they'll announce it for the US market at the FUN show? Would you use it if they did?

Interesting but can be a challenge when trying to store them.

Just like trying to store NGC slabs in PCGS boxes, I expect it will have to be a problem solved by the end user.

A few thoughts on these as, once upon a time, there was a person who was doing multicoin holders for "self slabbing" and I availed myself of a few so I could hand out some personalized gifts to non-collectors who might actually appreciate things like a birthyear set that was all together in 1 holder....

    • The start up cost on these isn't small, but for PCGS, and existing relationship with supplier, it probably isn't too bad.
    • The cost to use likely to be more than just for a single, but less than for multiple singles, but once "entombed", the sunk cost may prohibit "upgrades" and such.
    • When grading, conformity can be sacrificed. Imagine you do a classic year set but you have some in mid-UNC grades and others in mid-circ grades. The look would be off.
    • On the above point...could be GREAT to show a grading range....I think that would look pretty cool.
    • Probably not going to be used on the more expensive ones...like key dates, etc. Very few people could do that, tying expensive key dates up, together, when fewer would be likely to buy them.
    • Limited usage - limited usage will mean a slab premium, I believe, in getting them done
    • The larger holders already incur a cost (~$20 per?)...I could see that here as well.
    • Storage, and handling, not as easy as with single slab sizes. Imagine getting one of these, spur of the moment, at a show and trying to put it in your pocket and walk around

End of the day, I really like them. I think they are cool and have value for some folks. I do think they are more restrictive than single slabs and therefore won't be as widely utilized (rightfully so).

I wish the person who was doing the self-slab versions was still around. Cost was reasonable and, when used for display purposes or personalized gifts, they were awesome (imho)

I see the holder as a proof set for those who don't buy proof sets.

The cost listed on PCGS Asia is $10-15 per coin, depending on the holder you want. I imagine that if this is introduced in the US, the vast majority sold will be for modern proof sets, submitted in bulk at lower rates.

Nice presentation holders but the grading fees will eat up any real value.

Once rid of the shoes, you have room for the Imelda Marcos coin set

Is there any official word on if and how we can get these?? I recently bought a coin that would be perfect for it. There are a few $2 1/2 Indians with a retained cud error, and I have owned a few. I have obviously owned many of them normal as well. I recently found a transition coin, where the cud has started, but not completed yet. It's the first one I've seen, and I think it would be perfect for a normal, transition, and full retained cud 3 coin set.

In the right situation these would be nice. The demand would be small to start but, if available, would fill a special need.

Would love for my early proof sets or type; however appears that grades must match or fit in a range, and what does one do with CAC? Looks more suitable for modern sets or two coins as shown above.

Awesome @jwitten! Can you show the progression here? Call it a digital multiholder.

I started this thread based on a Facebook posting. In that thread, the OP just posted a response from customer service hinting that a multi coin holder is possibly in the future for the US market. I assume the particulars need to be ironed out before they'd say anything more promising than that, but the alternative of there being no current plans was not communicated.

Here is a full retained cud, in an error holder:

And here is a PCGS ms62 example I just picked up with only partial cud. Die crack at this point I guess? First one I've found as an in between specimen.

I’ve always wanted a three coin holder for my ‘43 cents.

Here’s a few more images of multi holders from an old thread.
    Sure do miss @curly

Very cool die crack. Often these are rarer than the retained cud stage. But less visually impressive I suppose.

Given the grade restrictions, I wonder if this is more suited for moderns:

    • If you choose to put coins of the same grade into one holder, each multi-coin holder is only marked with one unified grade.
    • If you choose to put coins of different grades into one holder, the holder may be marked with “GemBU”, which means the grades are above MS65, or be marked with the lowest grade in the group.

Absolutely, which is how I would expect over 95% of these to be put together, and most of those will be bulk submissions. The other 5% will be mint mark sets of Morgan dollars (87, 80-S, 85-O, 83-CC 21-D) holdered "Brilliant Uncirculated" for the greater market and interesting groups that present and sell well as groups, like @jwitten 's $2.50 Indians.

I believe it is a good idea and will sell well for people to give as gifts...i.e. birth year sets, anniversary, error progression as indicated above, significant historical events and modern sets. Cheers, RickO
