Steel nickel

I started looking for 1943 wrong metal nickels and found this one from several years ago at Heritage.

Never knew they existed. Cool!

Very interesting. I guess someone sneaked that one out of the mint straight away. Peace Roy

I wonder how many of these are around.
Hmm... ATS site is down?
6 FULL STEPS.
shudda used steel for all of em.
LOL. Now that is one "Kool with a K" coin.
Could you just imagine what a ruckus would ensue if a 1944 dated Nickel like that would ever show up?

If it was struck on a zinc-coated steel planchet then I can understand the attribution. However, if there is no zinc coating, then it would have to be made on a foreign coin planchet. The photos do not look like zinc-coated steel to me.
way cool. I never heard of it either. you learn something here all the time
I recall a poster here cherrypicking a similar coin in a bulk lot, his was a 1944-P and heavily circulated / corroded. A quick search found this article about that coin and another once owned by Bill Fivaz.

I've seen a couple of the Jefferson Nickels struck on a steel cent planchet. This one is pretty darn cool!
All the years I've been hunting, I'm still waiting to find a War Nickel struck on a Regular Nickel planchet! Do any of these exist? I have to do some research.
How much did it realize?

There was a 5 month gap between the last CuNi 5-cent coins and first use of CuAgMn alloy. Presumably the tote bins and been reused many times by then and any "stuck" CuNi planchets had been dislodged.
Here’s a few more lower grades though.

Pretty neat, never knew they existed, thanks for sharing !!!
Interesting... there are - according to the linked article - several 'off metal' Jefferson nickels from that period... I was not aware of these. Better look at my war time nickel hoard...
... Some hoard....probably about fifteen...Cheers, RickO
Another one turned up at Heritage. I did bid on it but couldn’t go that high for a damaged one.

I have some steel nickels. Canada struck them in 1944-45 (WWII); 1951-54 (Korean Police Action).
