The ANA Spring show is in Pittsburgh in March.
The Big ANA show is in Rosemont in August.
The Big ANA show is in Rosemont again in August 2021.
ahhhhhh thank you
I think Rosemont is the best place for the show. easy in easy out for any one who has to fly.
When I was on the ANA board I pushed for it
While Rosemont is great, on the whole, the Big ANA show MUST travel. The ANA is a NATIONAL organization.
I'd be in for Rosemont as a permanent location too. The whole "national" thing is garbage. When the show goes to California, attendance sucks. Philadelphia? That was a joke too.
I went to my first ANA in 1970 in Saint Louis. I went to that one because I thought that would be the closest the ANA show would ever be to my home. I liked it so much that I have been to every summer ANA since then ( 49 ). If the show had not been moving around the U.S. I might never have gone to the ANA show. The name of the organization is the American Numismatic Association not the Chicago Coin Club.
If you don't have a lot of vacation time or the deeper pockets to fly/stay over, the changing venues are great opportunities for the average collector to experience the show. May cut down the total attendance, but there will be many there who had never had the experience before. Only show I was able to get to was Cincinnati many years ago because it was practically in my back yard. Took two of the kids who still talk about the experience. Never would have happened if only venue is halfway across the country.
Rotate the summer show
East coast, Chicago, West coast
And the Spring show do Secondary much smaller venues in other locations around the US
@ScarsdaleCoin As far as the Spring Shows go, I believe that that is what the ANA attempts to do.
As far as the National Shows, the ANA is nowadays more limited because the Show attendance is not large enough. Also, the ANA attendees who show up don't spend enough on the incidentals of hotel rooms, fancy meals, booze and misc. and the people who own/control the venues know that we don't.
I like the story, and my first ANA attendance was in STL nine years later, I believe.
But don't 'dis' the Chicago Coin Club, they are mostly nice guys. They contribute a lot of work to the ANA convention when it is in Chicago.
@BillDugan1959 So your saying that coin collectors/numis are... what little chicks utter?
I am relating that the people with the major venues are eager for much larger groups who spend more and spend more freely.
Coin collectors at big shows spend the major bulk of what they have to spend on actual coins. This does not interest the people who control the convention facilities.
Every year, the ANA releases significant lies about their convention attendance.
That makes sense.
When your planning on expending 4+ digits of $ then the luxuries of the destination site takes a back seat. Then there is travel expenses, too.
Coin collectors are seemingly more economical with the incidentals than most groups. Four or five guys day-tripping together, via automobile to a big show two hundred miles away, is very common. In those instances, total expenses per head might not be thirty dollars.
Coin dealers are better, Charmy Harker seems to still spend on food and wine like the old time dealers did. Admirable and enviable.
The ANA does produce some good show reports.... It does get expensive though, when traveling to these large city venues. Someday, one of my vacation trips will coincide with a big coin show (preferably FUN)....Cheers, RickO
Everything that @BillDugan1959 has written on this topic
is spot on. There are also sales tax considerations and the
ease of getting to the convention. Do you as a collector want
to pay sales tax on your purchase? Do you as a dealer or
collector want to change planes more than once with your
inventory/collection? Organizations like Amway and the
Shriners can guaranty 30,000+ attendees, by comparison
the ANA is small potatoes. Several years ago Detroit was
proposed and several dealers openly stated they would
not attend because of security issues. Rosemont is by far
the best location for the summer ANA. If we lose that,
the hobby as a whole will suffer.
I'm all for Rosemont. Convenient, plus reasonably priced hotels and food.
I liked Rosemont last time the ANA was there. The West coast is tricky - Portland is good because of no sales tax, but a smaller city. It works well for the spring show once in a while. California has better population and flights, but maybe is covered with the Long Beach shows. Much as I would like to see another ANA in Seattle (I attended the 1990 show), the convention center is way too expensive, and honestly we don't have enough population to bring in the crowds. The East coast seems far away for me, but really that's where most of the collectors are.
I'm content with Rosemont every three years, perhaps attending another sometimes in between.
Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association
Amen to this!
I agree Rosemont is good, decent convention Center, easy parking, close to Ohare, close to decent restaurants and hotels, low crime, near the casino, and easy access to train to downtown Chicago. And Gene and Goergettis Steakhouse recently opened a location nearby.
Chase Park Plaza Hotel. My first ANA too .
I was there. Saw Eric Newman walking around .
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
Airport accessibility is a major plus in my opinion. I agree that Rosemont is an A+ location.
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.
The FUN show blows away all the
ANA shows. One day the ANA
will hopefully figure it out .
Would ANA possibly consider some type of joint show with another organization -- such as proctologists? If some collectors are going to get the shaft, it might as well be by a professional.
Good suggestion Roger
However there are already some
Proctologist’s posing as dealers
I went to 4-5 FUN shows in the 80's along with
a few ANA summer shows. The only plus that FUN
had at the time was a show in a warm climate in
the winter.
Someone remind RWB to never run for the ANA board
The most thankless job in numismatics is to be on the ANA board and decide where the conventions will be. Pretty much no one will be happy w/what you decide.
I've been to ANA at Rosemont twice. Great show and activity each time. I also went to it in Anaheim, not as convenient but I thought just as nice. Rosemont is an easy in and out as specialist noted. Alas I can't go this year as I sadly have to be Barcelona that week.............
