Looks like the more common 1916s probably made by the same “mint technician”.

Nope - never seen an example...until now.

What are the pick-up-points to ID this one in the future?

for those us who are from the "dark side", what are the markers to recognize these?
to me it looks like a 1927 buffalo nickel who has seen better days. :/

One of the things to look at: The plain that the Buffalo is standing on does not go all the way to the rim on both sides.

Also the shape of the buff’s right front leg is different from genuine coin.
and Indian’s neck curves inwards unlike on a real 27s buff.

    Thanks - very obvious now!

Would you call this an 'altered transfer die,' or a 'hand-made die' counterfeit?

Given all the other design similarities, my thinking is 'altered transfer die.' but I will defer to the discussion to see where this conversation evolves.

Good instructional thread and thank you @BUFFNIXX and @BuffaloIronTail for your inputs... it is posts such as this that help our less experienced members grow in the hobby. Cheers, RickO
