Keeping time for mint employees

Here are two samples of time and attendance records for Philadelphia Mint employees. One is a monthly record of absences, the other is a week's calendar of arrival and departure times for clerks.

The phrase in the Remarks column is: "Granted by the Secretary." The middle comment says "Detailed to Appointments Division."

    Looks like Miss H E Stevens was a reliable employee with her time in and out and no absences. :)

    Wonder how many of the absences were necessitated by lingering hangovers? >:)

    Thanksgiving. 29 Nov 1894.

    @RogerB

    Do you have the week that includes Thanksgiving? It would be interesting to see who was present before and after Thanksgiving.

    Nov 29th was Turkey Day per https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=1894&country=1

    I meant the second pic. To see the arr/dep times pre- post-T Day.

    Looks like a few substantial absences without excuse....I wonder if they had to bring a physicians note when returning to work? ;) Cheers, RickO

    It would seem that the day before was a half day, and the day after was a normal work day.

    The month of November (top image). The day before hours were 9-12. On TG the note says "Department Closed."

    RE: Hangovers. Monday would be the most likely day for absence due to overindulgence. Sunday was the only day everyone was off work and bars/saloons were open.

    Do both those logs go together? The second shows the 23rd as Sunday which could either be September or December but not November. I like those hours of 8-4 or better, 9-4. Also, it doesn't seem to distinguish between vacation and sickness; except one employee on the second log.

    It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.
