If free shipping makes the difference between making money vs losing money on the sale, I am assuming it is a low value item. It has been my observation that the lower the price of the items, the more likely to have trouble like this with a buyer. I've seen a lot more hassle posted here with buyers of 99-cent stuff on up to about $20 or so, percentage wise, than seems to pop up over say $50-$500 items.

and through ebay, a bubble mailer up to 5 or 6 ounces is like $2.60....I usually charge no more than $3.00 shipping. $3.50 is the full boat USPS rate, even though most sellers print out a label through ebay for the $2.60.

Essentially, you are correct, however, since ebay/paypal takes 12.9% of the $3.50 rate and then you have the cost of the shipping supplies (mailer, topload, penny sleev, etc). Even buying shipping supplies in bulk, the break even point is in the $3.40 range

IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I find that anything you sell that's less than $10 has a higher percentage of attracting problem buyers.
