At what price does the catalytic convertor manufacturers switch back to Platinum? Is it likely anytime soon?

Platinum is still being used. It is the catalyst of choice for diesel engines, apparently more effective than Palladium on those types of engines. I think gasoline engines can swap out catalysts, but it requires some retooling and recalculation. If Pt continues to lag Pd significantly, we'll see changes...

I wonder if people are scouring junk yards for platinum CC's...Have not heard of it, but if money is to be made, someone is doing it. With only 1 to 15 grams available (after processing), it would take quite a bit to provide a decent ROI.....Cheers, RickO

Keep in mind that the electric vehicle market is expanding rapidly. Well over 1,000,000 plug-ins were sold last year and 2018 estimates are more than double that figure. It's a small number relative to all vehicles sold (maybe 3%). But that may be enough to suppress prices on at least that segment of Pt and Pd.

Anyone have any idea when the catalytic converter manufacturers will switch over gas engine catalytic converters to platinum?

No idea when the switch will happen but the scrap metal guys pay us for the scrap converters we have in the shop. Here in NV we have guys who drive up from CA to buy scrap converters. @ricko first thing to get removed in most auto junkyards here is the converters. The yards cut them out and sell them for scrap right away before they let anyone pick parts.
