Why is this OK

Now I don’t have a problem with it but it seems to me that in today’s highly sensitive society that this should not be OK, it’s seems like a double standard to me
Heck fire, that's a compliment.
It's not OK. It is like you said......a double standard.
Nothing wrong with a good double standard ..... snowflake
because it is OK for certain people to be racist
White Men Can't Jump
Why isn't the term "Black Friday" under attack as offensive and racist?
Why isn't the name of the presidential residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, The White House, under attack as offensive and racist.
Same question for the terms White Sale, Black Ops, Black Hole, White Dwarf, Dark Matter, Dark Web, The Black Knights, White Horse, Whitehall, White Knight, Black Mark, Whiteout, Whitewash, White Sand, Black Sand and many others?
I think a much more pressing subject, as a long time member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), is sports teams using animals for their team names and mascots in a derogatory manner showing no respect at all for the feelings of the various species.
Multiple bison have been abused over the decades by Colorado University and its students when they shackle the bison and force it to run the field during CU football home games.
I get the point you're making, Paul, by imo you're reaching.
I do want to know why this is okay, though. shudder

Hi Geordie! I have no idea what that photo is or what it’s supposed to refer too in its current form or why it’s offensive? I really don’t know what it is I’ve never seen it. I’m not trying to engage you in a disagreement again my friend but why am I not surprised you say “I’m reaching”? Probably because it’s reverse racial profiling which I’m sure you don’t think exists.
if i was Christian McCaffrey and a black player said that about me, feeling supremely honored would be my visceral reaction
if i was Christian McCaffrey and i said something even remotely similar about a black player, i'd get tarred and feathered, regardless of intent
this is the world we live in
you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet
That's the new Flyers mascot "Gritty".
@TNP777 ………..there is a point and it is valid. About 15 years ago in the city I lived in we had a High School that had a very good Basketball team and they were all white. A team from Chicago came down to play them. This team was all black as was the coach. It was a very good and close game, but the black team won. When the winning coach was interviewed on T.V. he said "they played us pretty good for a bunch of white boys"! Can you imagine what the flack would have been if that had been reversed!! I don't care what anybody says......it's a double standard.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and Geordie of course is free to interpret "Gritty" any which way he wants.
Unless I missed it because I really don't follow hockey at all, i don't think the Flyers ever concisely explained what "Gritty" is supposed to be. But would rather let their fans interpret the new team mascot as they wish with the basic idea of it simply being a fun character.
My opinion is the Gritty character is sort of a take off from the various character designs that are on display during the annual Mummer's Day parade in Philadelphia. Gritty would fit right in at the Mummer's Parade.
Ok so are people like Geordie offended by it?? It looks like a muppet character 🤷♂️
Ofcourse it is and sensible people understand that, the other people that go out of their way to find offensive things and cry about it only see things their way lol it’s comical actually
We live in a society where even an innocent comment is deemed offensive yet we allow for double standards to exist. People are punished for even the slightest accusation, yet others are not.
I hate these double standards. My parents taught me that what's fair to one should be fair to all.
The country is filling up with idiots.
I couldn't agree MORE!!!
Same here, well said
Because we now live in a world where someone is butthurt about something. The times of suck it up and be a man are replaced with safe rooms and colleges banning capital letters because it scares students. In 1944 18 year olds stormed the beaches at Normandy. Today 18 year olds have safe rooms to protect them from words.
I was raised by a father from WWII. Today kids are raised by snowflakes. Look no farther.
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
Give it time. When those terms can be effectively politicized it will come to pass.
Also look no further than those Youtube videos about animal behavior in the wild. Nature is not kind to the weak, they usually get killed or eaten. History has shown with war that is true among human beings as well.
Can't remember the year but Donruss had a baseball card with Frank White and Bud Black that was called "Black and White".

I guess my brand of funny doesn't work on CU anymore. I wasn't trying to say I was offended by Gritty - I was trying to joke about his nightmarish visage - in other words: while I'm typing, check THIS thing out! Can you imagine being a kid and seeing him for the first time?
As far as the topic at hand, I'm not going there again. Anything I've said in the past, no matter how logical or common sense has done anything to sway any of you who deny the presence of subtle or institutional racism. Most of you scoff and say it doesn't exist, while I and a few others recognize that our white skin affords us opportunities and less scrutiny than our black and brown brothers and sisters. Several times I've invited you guys to have conversations with your black friends (assuming you have them) and ask them to tell you stories about the little things we have no clue are happening to them.
Have a good day, y'all.

People like me, Paul? Whatever is that supposed to mean? Flaming, America-hating liberal? Snowflake? If so, that's kinda funny. I'm none of those things. I'm still the same faith-based conservative man I've always been, a proud military veteran, and a man who counts his blessings damn near every day that I was lucky enough to be born in this wonderful country.
eta: I also don't feel threatened by the browning of America. I suspect that particular fear motivates some of the comments here and elsewhere.

Following a simple rule would remove most of the social strife present in society.
Treat others as you would want them to treat you.
Alas, many segments of society [both in the public sector and the private sector; and both within and outside of the USA] have no interest in removing social strife. Just the opposite. For a variety of reasons, these segments of society desire it and want more of it.
There is ample opportunity in today's America with the growing economy for all Americans. All is takes is a desire to learn and work hard...that's it.
Frankly those not willing to do that, often use various "cards" as an excuse for their own failure when the actual reasons for their failure are ineptitude and laziness.
Yes Geordie, I stereotype you as someone who is easily offended, I’m not referring to you as a bad person or anything like that, I swear I didn’t know if you thought that muppet character was offensive, and I’m serious that I thought you probably were. Your a good guy and I respect you as someone who looks at things different than I do. I’d be willing to bet you think I’m racist but I’m really not. And btw my good friend Tomba - actually his real name is David but wants to be called a Tomba to represent his Black heritage- is someone I’ve had heavy conversations with about today’s society and he agrees with me about a lot of stuff that people get offended by is way over the top. He is a grade school teacher, went to school and took himself out of a bad neighborhood, worked hard and leads a nice family life without anger. Hey at the end of the day I know what’s right and treat people with respect and that’s good enough for me.
And Geordie if you think what is in my my opening post is ok then I fear you only see what you want to see.
I'm easily offended, huh? You literally started a thread whining about what a black guy said about a white guy. You're literally looking for ways to make yourself feel better about racism. Do I think you and several other prominent posters in Sports Talk are racists? Yes, I do. Does that make me not want to continue to be friendly with and to you? No, it does not. There are many racists in my own family. I don't like that particular part of their mindset, but I love them in spite of it. There are certainly aspects of my character that are unlovely, and they choose to love me in spite of them, too.
Maybe I am easily offended, or maybe I simply choose to see things differently that I used to, or choose to actively challenge my deeply-held stereotypes I've built up over my life. That's why I keep beating the same drum here - that I cannot ever know what it's like to be a black person or a Hispanic in America. I can't possibly know what it's like to experience the subtle racism I KNOW they experience. How do I know this? Because I've had those conversations. I've heard the pain and anger.
I have lived most of my life right in the middle of one of the richest agriculture areas in the world - central California. Our lifeblood, and frankly much of the country's lifeblood, is crops, orchards and vineyards. We would be in a world of hurt if it weren't for migrant labor. For much of my life I sneered at them. I belittled them. I call them names like "wetback" and "spic". I told my friends I wish they would go back to Mexico. Looking back, I was a fool. I was ignorant. I'm deeply ashamed of how I thought and spoke.
I'm a much different man than I was 10 years ago, or even five years ago. You say I'm only seeing what I want to see. No, my friend, I'm seeing things as I wish I would have seen them all my life. I see people that have the same desires and wants that you and I have - the desire to love, to raise a family, to participate in their community, to revel in their unique culture without being discriminated against, while also inviting those outside their culture to come and participate in it and learn something outside their comfortable box.

Geordie I started this thread to make a point I seriously can’t imagine why you would think I was whining? LOL whatever! Another thing I frankly I couldn’t care less if you think I’m racist or not, I find it funny that the stuff you claim you said 10 years ago is nothing I’ve ever said but you probably assume I say? I guess your a reformed racist and anyone that disagrees with you Is in your eyes a racist. Is that why your hell bent on believing all people of color are doomed by “White America” ? I think it’s ridiculous but if that’s how you feel then go live your life like that and do what you gotta do bud.
Oh my gosh, I just read the term institutional racism. Good grief. Of course darius slay is a racist. Plain as day. Can you imagine if mccaffrey had made a racist comment about a black quarterback? It's all you would hear on talk radio. Stephen A. Would have already had a stroke. Yes, Virginia, black people can be racist too.
.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Agreed. I will say this though I don’t think Slay is a racist and I know his comments were actually a compliment but reverse it and screaming liberals would be calling MCCaffrey a racist, it would be all over the media and the kids reputation would be destroyed. That was my point, little things that are said and meant to be harmless can cause an outrage except it’s usually the white people that get the bad publicity. I don’t think I’m “Reaching” as Geordie says, I think I bring up a valid point. Fair to say all people of race and creed should be held to the same standard.
I agree that most people gloss over the fact that minorities can be racist too. It is one of the most obvious problems with the whole "if you are white you can't say that or do that" movement the Left has embarked upon. The double standard is glaring and should not be tolerated. If McCaffrey complemented Cam Newton by saying something about Cam doing something like a white QB he would be crucified.
Labeling everyone that doesn't agree with you about the state of race relations a racist is nonsense and counter productive. There are obvious issues still in the US when it comes to how minorities are treated but the attempts by some to blame every trial and tribulation minorities experience on race gets old. There are plenty of white people that are poor and struggling, that live in poverty, that get passed up for promotions, that get harassed by police, that don't feel like they are getting a fair shake. It is not something exclusive to being a minority but for some reason the PC folks don't seem to care about them unless those folks say something objectionable.
Robb
Oh my gosh, I just read the term institutional racism. Good grief. Of course > @perkdog said:
I totally agree that all people should be held to the same standard. I do, however, still think Slay is a racist. why else would he say what he said? here is the definition:
Racist:
a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another.
when he said what he said, he was displaying characteristics of the definition above. He clearly feels that black athletes display certain traits or abilities that white players do not because of their skin tone. There is a very clear double standard here. Identity politics plays a large role in this double standard, but that is as far as I will go into politics on the forum
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
People who actually think only the majority can be racist are idiots.............no matter their color.
I agree joebanzai. they also have an agenda. It is funny though that everyone is all up in arms about minorities and majorities in this country. They probably have no idea that 60% of the world is Asian and 1 of every 5 people alive are Chinese. If you look at it in that light, all non Asians living in the US are minorities, white included.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Awesome post Robb. I wont air our private PM but I will say that your post especially from your experiences defines you as a very reasonable person, maybe Geordie will take a step back and be a little more down to earth and actually take in some of the points I’m trying to make rather than say I’m “Reaching” with some of the things I’m posting. Geordie wants to make people aware and I can appreciate that however I’d like for him to understand my point of view as well.
Hating people because of race, creed, color or religion is just plain silly...
...especially when there are so many more legitimate reasons to hate people.
Like, how about the people who get off the escalator and then just stand there while they decide where to go next?
