I usually don't buy RED copper...but this coin I had to own - 1853 Large Cent in PCGS MS-65RD

Senator32Senator32 Posts: 405 ✭✭✭✭✭

Rarely are large cents ACTUALLY RED even when the slab says it. I ran across this coin this week and loved it. Swirling luster, great strike and only a small toning spot that is not very distracting because of its location. I am sure some of you copper buffs may have other opinions...but for a type example I think this is about as nice of a Braided Hair as I have seen (that was not a proof).

I love it. This is the kind of look that I consider to be "hard surfaces" on red classic copper and that is what I prefer.

The video shows so much of the luster and sparkle that the True View is lacking. Nice looking cent!

That's a remarkable coin for that state of preservation. I'd be so scared of it developing spots I'd keep it in an airtight, nitrogen filled box!

It's so unusual to see a large cent with original mint red.

    A rare bird indeed.

Great coin. The spot actually adds to the authenticity of the color, imo. And it's in a nice location.

    Nice pickup.

A truly amazing cent...I just commented in the other thread about red copper.... It would be really interesting to know the history of the coin to better understand the state of surface preservation. Such a beautiful coin... Cheers, RickO

Great piece. I agree that the video brings out the luster much more than the True View. Gorgeous

I did a "copy and paste" thingy Senator because I'm in the same boat as you.
Call me what you want but I think red copper is for amateurs.

Why is it that a 50 year old cent can be unquestionably original red and totally accepted. But when the red cent is 100 or 150 years old its color is automatically suspect?

I do not trust red copper at whatever state of life.
Old copper should ALWAYS be brown in my book, but if you want to pay the outrageous premium for red than go for it.

Like it . New grading designation:

    HR ( Hard Red)

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.
