Having FUN with...(dare I say it?).... c o m m e m s......(ah, so)

I hesitate to admit that my "newest" ...fixation... is on the much maligned "classic" ..uh... commems.
(please don't hit me )
I'm looking at ...INTERESTING... designs instead of condition issues.
It's kinda... well... FUN!
It seems they are far less constrained by the CAC racket and, well... they're ...um "different."
Call it a perverse aberration or a stupid move, but darn it.... That's the story.
And.... if you have.... (or know where to find) .... a cool Pan-Pac ... silver half, pls let me or whomever has it know that I am a serious buyer if it's a nice one in the $1500-$2500 ...range.
Thanks and ...well... you know.

Gratuitous pix of ....stuff.

etc, etc. etc....
I love em, but they frighten me. Used to have a nice type set and sold just before the bloodbath. I miss them and wish I had kept the Hawiian.
My plan is to ..forget... about "sets" and just get cool stuff. *
I feel the same. The only ones I ever owned were a Stone Mtn and a Bay Bridge, though I don't actually remember that one..I saw it in an auction archive from a long time ago and am not even sure why! There are about 10 I would love to own design-wise, but they are not even on a short list at this point. Maybe someday. I really like these 3 of yours!
@topstuf Well, I also like commemoratives. But I also like a CAC sticker on my slab.
This one is not CAC'ed but I like it anyway:

You rebel, you!
It’s, it’s....... gasp...... it’s OK to like something that’s not CAC’d?
Well...... that’s a relief.
(Looks like a really nice Oregon).
I like 'em, too.
I think.. those coins are... you know ....
Noice! 😁

Welcome to the mad house. Enjoy the ride.
This price weakness presents a great opportunity to buy coins that appeal to you

Commems and Early Type
Minimal "risk" is kinda cool for a change.

Not only are the designs more varied, but if the whole thing dropped to zero it would be less of a loss than a more common coin just getting "adjusted."
I like commemoratives. I built a set around states I have lived and worked in...(nine)...and a few extra's that came along. We still had art on coins when most commemoratives were issued...certainly far better than any circulating coins issued now...Cheers, RickO
obviously my favorite and almost exclusive thing I collect. My newest from a fellow forum member.
I had lots of fun putting together my 50-coin type set.

I have been picking up a few as they appeal to me. Sometimes because I lived in or near the place commemorated, sometimes subject matter, sometimes toning, whatever I like. I will never put a full set together.
@CommemDude - love those Roanokes - I've been looking for a nice one for about 6 months now.
Here is a set I sold a few years back when I didn't have an interest. With hindsight, I wish I had kept them.

Some very nice commems in here!

What got me sorta motivated was a thread a month or so ago when we were discussing what coins would even "interest" a non-collector or...potential... collector.
That sorta lit the fuse....er....candle.
More modest in price and certainly different from pocket change.
So....anyhow... it's my "thing" (for now) and.....as all collectors will attest..... NO ONE EVER CHANGES THEIR FOCUS ..

I really like the series and have about 6-7 so far. Great series.
Best place to buy !

That's another thing that has surprised me. Even though the prices are ...more... modest than some classic regular issue types, finding ....attractive... ones is still a "process."
It also seems that many VERY nice ones are spread over BOTH PCGS and NGC slabs.
Wait, stop.
Can we please go back to all the threads about how this series was dead and prices falling further and further?
I would like to avoid any competition!

Ooops.... sorry.. forgot.
Commems are very very very dead. Only fools would want anything to do with them.
Especially any nice Panama Pacific 50c which should be sold to a sucker as soon as possible.
Thanks for the reminder.
Oregon? Beavers are nice!
I have been collecting classic commems for a while and it is nice they have been in a downturn for some time from a collecting point of view. 'Investment' point of view not so much. But hey, this is a hobby and hobbies are supposed to be fun!
Glad you are enjoying the variety and accessibility of them.

I believe that's the State of Ecstasy.
It's either that or the State of Disarray.
I'll come back after a salt dip
I just realized the beaver I was referring to is on the 1936 Albany, NY Charter, not the Oregon! Doh! Lol
i love them oregon commems. sweet
@topstuf
That Bay Bridge was a heck of a nice grab off the NEN website. I had my eye on that one as well and by the next day it was gone.

I have a Pilgrim coming that I discussed at length with the seller.
Don't have it yet, but the color intrigues me a ....BUNCH!
Well .....they're....um kinda expensive still (especially for >66) ....you know; I can not imagine them at the height of .....hmm their game
so.....if I decide to start on the uh....."classic" .....oops ...commems
I will get the animals first ..... bear, eagle, beaver and oh.....oak tree 2
There is NO stupid move nor such a fixation on collecting .....um "different" non CAC-able or.... uhhh sorta in that constrain
if it happens to be your thing (for now)
And as a collector I can ATTEST ....... EVERYONE ALWAYS CHANGE THEIR FOCUS ...... but darn it.... That's a theory
Thanks .... and well... you know....I will start with the _cool _beaver
My ideal pick up ..... not near pocket change
MS66 $319
You were thinking of Oregon State. Yeah, that's it.

Platypus???
@DMWJR - I just drooled on my keyboard a little bit. Wow!!
But, just to be clear - NO ONE SHOULD COLLECT COMMEMS! As @topstuf said, you'd be a fool, a moron, a rube to try and collect them!
The most worthless ones are those in old holders and with color! Totally worthless - might as well ship 'em to me.
My current "Box of 20"
Mods, could you please make DMWJRs two yummies go away?
Mods, especially make DMWJR's Pan-Pac disappear!!

PS: What lovely coins!
Nice!

I have more somewhere. Some are beautiful for sure. I can see the attraction.

This has GOT TO STOP !!
Commems are for nerds and I'm not through gathering.
Go back to something incredibly rare!
Morgans, maybe.
Some super coins in this thread. Congrat's.
I've been interested in starting a Commem collection myself. There are several that I just have no interest collecting however...so I'm thinking a 'box of 20' type collection might work out very well.
Great thread!
