Just heard today the news that Selby passed away earlier this month. He was a great staple in the coin trade and will be sorely missed. I’m sure other will add their thoughts to this post but very sad news

:'( Something is not right when a long-time, well-known dealer as Shelby can pass away and we don't hear about it for over a week (?)! Many of us who knew him are in his generation and it is scary.

Scarier and sader to me that the folks here don’t seem to know him. He was truly a hall of fame dealer

Although we could never seem to do a deal together, there was never a show I did not seek him out. Shelby was always impeccably dressed and a real pleasure to talk to. A wealth of knowledge from my collecting stand point. I will truly miss you my friend. R.I.P.

Perhaps you can share a good story or two...

In all honesty, I've known Shelby for several decades, I've bought one CC dollar from him and sold him several in addition to empty CC boxes with cards. He let me examine originally toned dollars in his case many times. We have always greeted each other in passing at shows and I believe he actually made it a point to stop by the table of whatever authentication service I worked for at the time to say hello.

Nevertheless, l have no stories and I cannot even tell you which state he lived in over the years.

His name is Selby, not Shelby....for those who know him.

Did business with him for 4 decades. He was always a gentleman.

I sold Selby a 200+ lot CC Dollar deal in the early or mid eighties. I think this was before he was known as "King of CC". He opened each box with the enthusiasm of a kid opening Christmas presents. The whole concept of the Wild West, Carson City, the Comstock Lode, and GSA's marketing bit him hard.

I bought a P AU50 89-CC Morgan from the King & later flip it to a board member.

He was in the processs of moving to the left coast at that time.

Is there a thread for coins I regret to buy?

    If so, here is mine:

I showed him a P AU58 1889-CC dollar, full of luster that @RickO will approve. The King talked me out of buying it so I passed on it😩, bad move on my part. It wouldn’t surprise me if the King later snapped it up.

OMG so sad. I was not close to him, but he was big time when I stated back in 1978!!!!!! He was always nice to me

He's probably w/the big CC hoard in heaven. Rest in peace Selby

I stand corrected. I stated we never could get together for a deal, but I was mistaken. I purchased a 84-cc DMPL GSA which is a stunner. It is now graded 65+* DMPL and is cac’d . It is my best 84 dimple coin I own in a GSA. FWIW

Sorry to hear about this and condolences to all who will miss him.

I sold Selby Unger a few boxed CC dollars about 35 years ago and still have a picture in my mind of what he looked like. He was THE buyer back then.

Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.

TONED DOLLARS told me about Selby today. I was very surprised. We flew back to CA and had dinner together on a layover in Dallas coming back from the June Baltimore show. He was working at Monaco here in Orange County until this year. Since the start of the year, he was working with Doug Sharpe. He appeared healthy and very mentally sharp. Does anyone know what happened?
