A look back in time to 1971 ... My Lincoln Cent Collection as a 14 year old kid

i was amazed to recently stumble on my old Whitman Folder that I was working on when i was 14 years old way back in 1971. This is a photo of just book2. I also had a book 1, but it had a lot of holes. Most of all of these are from roll searching. So the conditions are pretty horrible -- but what memories!
It's kind of amazing to compare my 50 year old childhood collection (above), to what I put together as an aging adult (below). Photo's of coin faces complements of Phil Arnold (PCGS TrueView). Digital Coinboard I designed in Photoshop. Ahh, the magic that can happen when you combine new digital technologies with the increased income of a upper middle aged adult.
Still there is something kind of romantic and nostalgic about my old Whitman folder.

Very nice. Both sets are excellent for their respective eras. Thanks for sharing.
I agree there is something to be said about those old Whitman folders, I'm glad you kept yours, I didn't but wish i had.
Brings back some fond childhood memories.
by the way, your current set looks really nice.
I wish that I had kept my old Lincoln folder.
I still have mine from my youth (Whitman's). What I missed then I am filling with junk silver. Nice fun side collection. Done with dimes, need 2 Washies not 32's and some Franklin's. Just go to my bullion dealer with my list and see what he has. Still fun even though not the core collection, just something to occupy time and filling a slot gives a feeling of accomplishment even if it is junk silver.
I remember having to buy the 1955 S from Littleton. I did find the others for the number two book by searching (mid-60's). The newer set is lovely !
That newer display board intrigues me. I have an interest in designing my own displays. Could you please explain how you created that?
My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.
The "Before" and "After" photos are amazing! I love how those cents have taken on a rich, deep tone over the years.
Yup, exciting collection for a 14 year old. Glad you kept it. Thanks for sharing !!!![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

I am of similar age to you and remember those folders, too, I still have mine. It was nice that one could find many of the latter LC's just from circulation.
Coincidentally, just yesterday, I was going through some 'stuff' and found my old Lincoln cent Whitman folder... still some holes in it...also found a Jefferson nickel folder... lots of holes... Five cents was a lot back then...Sure does bring back some memories...Cheers, RickO
I still have all of my Whitman folders - Lincolns in the tri folders and also in the Dansco style folders.
Nearly all the coins taken from bags of parking meter change in Racine Wisconsin, but a few from pocket change. We kept all the steel cents and the S mintmarks.
Also started an Indian cent folder - many more holes in that one.

Both sets are one each end of the coin collecting spectrum BUT...... both are true examples of how you can collect coins ANYWAY YOU WANT!!!!!!!!
HAPPY COLLECTING
The digital coin board and the coins are impressive! Very clever creation.
What I did was inspired by this vintage coinboard manufactured in the 1930's

I gave my first penny collection away as a gift. All but a few of the keys were from circulation. Bought only the keys, with the exception of the 14D which was gifted to me. My second collection I still have in an old Meghrig holder, my third was sold individually in an auction, keys were all holdered in NGC slabs. Those were the days. I had a bank account with checks from my paper route and can remember buying stuff with a check for a dime, then found it cost me several times that for bank fees. But it allowed me to go to the bank as an eleven year old and get small change to go through. Amazing how many silver quarters I traded for copper and nickel in the late 50's and early 60's.

Cool. I either sold or gave away most of my childhood collections

An era of no slabs, no stickers but collecting then was a lot more fun then than it is today.
I still have my Lincoln's and they look just like yours! Same era too, early 70's. PS, That was a great time to be a kid. With my trusty Schwinn Sting Ray, and not a cell phone in sight, we had complete freedom. Just show up for dinner.
