I inspected two separate original rolls of 1963 D MS cents I acquired as a YN and discovered .......

............. something interesting.

Before I looked at the coins I read the Jamie Hernandez Coin Facts write up on the 1963 D cents. He states that most 1963 D MS cents are low grade (spotted, marks, etc,) and that this date is the most difficult post 1930 cent to find in MS 66 and higher grades. He also states that he found one MS roll of these cents that contained multiple high grade coins that did not have the usual spots and marks.

Well in looking at the two rolls of cents I have had for decades, I found that one roll contained low grade coins with spots, marks, planchet flaws, die polishing lines and muted luster. The other roll has a surprising number of coins which are far superior to those in the other roll. Some of the coins have great luster, no spots, minimal marks and positive eye appeal.

Again, very interesting.

I also have some other rolls from childhood I am looking through, including a roll of MS 1969 S cents. In that roll were 4 cents that have machine doubling. Notwithstanding the machine doubling, seeing these four coins is a treat. If I find anything else interesting in these cents from my childhood I will post about them.

That sounds like fun. Glad you find some nice ones that weren't all spotted.

    63-D is really tough.
Most coins were struck on planchets that were really of poor quality, resulting in coins that are dull and washed-out.
The planchets are rough and covered with hundreds of tiny ticks and abrasions.
A nice coin with cartwheel luster is a rare find indeed.
Sometimes the graders take into consideration the poor planchet stock; most times they don't.

Sounds like fun searching through those. On a slightly different note, I inherited a bunch of rolls of 1963 P an D nickels from my father. After searching a couple of dozen rolls, I can say that a mere handful actually look nice, and none of them has full steps.

After looking at a few more rolls of MS cents I found a few 1960 D Large Date cents and a few 1970 S Large Date cents that are very high quality.

High quality, booming luster, blazing copper Mint State cents are very pleasing to the eye.

    After looking at a few more rolls I have found some very nice 1958 D, 1964 P, 1964 D, 1968 S and 1969 S cents.

Rolls of 1957 P and 1963 P cents had low grade coins only.

Still need to look through some rolls of 1974 D, 1974 S and 1975 D cents.

I will take some photos of a few of the best coins with my cell phone. If the photos turn out to be good (not likely) I will post them.
