I feel much better knowing that this 1896 S Morgan has been professional graded

I actually laughed out loud when I saw it. This is a real auction house. I'm surprised they would post something like this.

The Philadelphia Mint: making coins since 1792. We make money by making money. Now in our 225th year thanks to no competition. image

I've never seen anything like that before. Not showing the grade is pretty strange just to say the least. The coin looks kinda weird too :D Probably not a good idea to bid.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Umm, was that an attempt to write "Noice" on it?

You always get “great deals” in “estate sales.” Give me a break....

The bottom left of the Slab says "AU-58". What, you don't believe everything you read?

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

EBTH has a terrible reputation. Search for reviews of them and you’ll quickly see that they are not a great company.

Bad news all around. Stay way away from their auctions.

All the fake coins and fake slabs really make me angry! I know they've always been around, and always will, but some are really getting good and aren't as obvious as this one.

I haven't taken a look at EBTH in about a year, so they've really gone downhill. Not here to defend them.

    BUT

Bought a Dansco with 18 Buffalo nickels in 2015. Here are 3 with incredible toning, graded by our host:

Also had a 1913-D Type 1 come back MS66 from PCGS as well.

The garbage is garbage and easily spotted, no different than the awful stuff on ebay. The fake stuff is usually easy to spot, as are the horrendous coins, like the one in the OP.

As for estate sales, as I've said before, maybe that's true in other areas of the country, but here in Colorado the stuff I've seen is not only genuine, but quality. Not every sale, not every estate sale company. But with the caveat emptor and buy the book mentality, plus now years of training, it's easy to spot deals and to avoid getting hosed.

And yes, I bought a GSA 1878CC Morgan in its original mailing packaging from the house it was sent to (the address matched) that clearly had been opened just once or twice since it was ordered in the 1970s. Got a great deal, PCGS graded it MS65.

Gotta find the diamond in the rough.

That being said, it appears this once promising alternative has torched customers, now has an irrational shipping policy, and is loaded more with fakes and garbage than when it started out. Scratching them off my list!

GSAs, OBW rolls, Seated, Walkers. Anything old and Colorado-focused, CO nationals.

Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.

:'( Sad to see things like this... mainly because someone will now be out good money.... Cheers, RickO
