Now that I've started wading in the commem pool...

I'm beginning to wonder if the decline in the segment is due to lack of interest or lack of decent coins.

Just a quick look on EBAY shows 3 pages at 250 per page all in PCGS slabs selling for over $350.
Not sure it would be a lack of decent coins.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    Define decent?

There's definitely a lack of interest. I just bought a 67 CAC Columbia at GC for 60% of greysheet. It's a NICE coin, just no demand.

To be fair, I could list a pile of dog crap for $500, that wouldn't make it collectible.

    100% correct.

But..... I did put them in high to low order and saw quite a few really nice commens.
I just did that search parameter out of my own curiosity and was floored by some examples.

Just collect them if you love them. Unlikely to be much of an investment. Some of them rank among the nicest US coin designs.

I agree with you. There are a lot of nice commems out there. This is not a bad time to buy them. Except for the big three, they are all very affordable right up to 66/67.

I agree. I would say the same about pretty much any coin. You start worrying about profits, it's no longer a hobby.

There is no coin that I would say is obviously a good "investment"

I must be seeking the "wrong" ones.

    Pan-pac selections very limited.
Ditto Gettysburgs with BOTH shields unmarried.

All of the above and the price IMHO ;)

I have a set I've been working on for several years now. Love the history behind the coins and the people.
Just enjoy it and be picky in your coin selection.

The monster coins, toners and top pop still sell for a lot.

Everything else is suffering a market bifurcation which is happening to a lot of coin segments.

Commemorative coins are attractive and unique designs. I enjoy them as examples of what artistry we should have on American coins... As far as market values, if it is currently a down market, grab what interests you.... I built a set of the states I have lived in...and a few others. Cheers, RickO

The coins are out there. I have recently found several gems. The problem is people still want moon money for these real nice ones even though the market is way down. You could easily put together a very nice top 10 set together just on ebay alone overnight. It would cost you out the wazoo though. The top pop coins are real high. That's why im putting together a MS65-67 set. There are still some real nice coins out there for a bargain.

Classic Commens are a super deal right now.

The lower pop of collectors is the reason for downturn. I have no problem getting nice ones and retail them (around CDN cpg, a fair price) on a regular basis.

I like these in MS64-MS66. Great buying opportunity.

    Investor
