I told her if she wins, she needs to buy us an island.
Johnson island, about 300 miles west of Paradise is for sale via the GSA. It comes with it's own atoll and landing strip as well as buildings. Hawaii is the nearest shopping, unfortunately! It was a refueling station during WWII for ships at sea and planes. Plant a few trees and clean up the place and there you go!

I still think it was incredible for Ellison to buy the Hawaiian island of Lanai for $300M.

It was briefly offered for sale in 2005, but then withdrawn.

Lotto and scratch offs are played by those who can least afford it, doubt that Buffet buys a quick pic. I'm still gonna buy a couple quick pics. If I win I'll keep just enough for myself and family and give the rest away in the form of my own lotto. The lotto odds will be high probability of winning.

Yes, I heard that the odds of winning are 1 in 300,000,000.
That is 300 MILLION!!!!!
So if the odds of winning are 1 in 300,000,000 and the Jackpot is $1,000,000,000 all I have to do is buy 300,000,000 tickets and I win $1,000,000,000.
I might need a few of you guys to go in with me,,,,, I am a little short.
So you buy the 300 million tickets for $600 million. The cash payout is close to that and if you add in all the fractional prizes you might turn a marginal profit. One or two other folks share the prize and the plan goes kaput.
@Coinstartled well your off a little but we get the point. Money has been rolling in since July. So yes Odds of winning this amount is what you stated, the amount collected is wrong. If they sell say 150M tickets normally and it runs say 3 times a week at 2.00 a ticket, now do the math.

I went by the graphic in the opening post which shows a cash payout of $548 Million. It may rise to maybe $600 or $650 million by the time the numbers are drawn. If Grandam buys the 300,000,000 tickets and is the sole jackpot winner, his efforts of visiting 14,000 convenience stores in two days will have been a success. One or more other winners and he will have some 'splainen to do to his wife.
@Paradisefound said: It's famous Sweetheart Rock ....... Island of Lana'i
Wow, you just took me back to the day spent there on that little island back in '17. Sweetheart Rock and the hike there was beyond stunning, plus the rest of our time on Lanai was a blast. It's a day you never wanted to end. But it did...
Figure the odds of a jackpot winner being in my city is 1 in 600. Maybe a couple hundred places here that sell tickets so the odds are 200 x 600 or 120,000 to one against me finding the right retailer. Of course I have to buy the right ticket out of the 3000 that they sell.
The first dollar he owned was gained from the sale of turkeys hatched from a few eggs....
Years ago I was doing some guest teaching for 12th grade economics and the regular teacher told me that students in his class don't pay attention unless they could figure out how what you were teaching led them to make more money. I liked learning for the sake of learning but I took that as advice on how to teach his class.
Recently, when talking to an acquaintance, I mentioned that her kids can work for funds instead of an allowance to build a work ethic. She replied that her son told her that "he's not going to work until he's over 18, work is what she [his mother] does." I'm was like wow, that's certainly different from when I grew up.
I do buy a ticket for the lottery.. even when the jackpot is 'small' - that is a relative term when talking millions of dollars....I do not expect to win, but it is nice to know my name is 'in the hat', so to speak....Should the impossible occur, I would be giving most of it away to family, and some deserving acquaintances. Yes, I would keep enough to ensure comfort and the occasional purchase.....Cheers, RickO

Not quite $1 billion yet ($970 Million).
Imagine a lottery winner answering the question on what they would do with the winnings and answering with buying a coin?
OK I'll buy one
Steve
I have my 10 tickets and totally expect to win,,,,,,,,, you guys get your inventory list updated,,,,,,, I will be going on a buying spree.
Right after I pick-up my new DEMON CHALLENGER.
Don't have a single ticket but will buy you all a house in Paradise if I ever win one of these years

The wife keeps talking about it.

I long ago quit paying attention to the lottery. As soon as I buy my ticket, they take the numbers out of the hopper.
"The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math". So, I let my wife buy the tickets.
My Financial Planner told me lottery tickets were my best chance at achieving my financial goals
Better odds of finding a 93-S dollar in change I imagine. But also cheap entertainment for a couple bucks
Good luck everyone
If I had TDN wealth/budget I would put together a set
of Goloid, Metric and Washlady pattern dollars. I would
add in the "School Girl" dollar as well.

I would buy some of the coins he does. But I would also look at cool foreign coins with significant historic value...
The Lottery is a voluntary tax. I paid my $4 "stupid tax" 'cuz my wife told me to.
Check out my current listings: https://ebay.com/sch/khunt/m.html?_ipg=200&_sop=12&_rdc=1
First purchase would be all outstanding shares of CU for $131 million so I could bring back the Olay Seven.
Next would be the finest coiled hair Stella on the market.
Third would be a Carvel ice cream franchise.

True, but after taxes and fees, your check is about 250,000,000
Many successful BST transactions with dozens of board members, references on request.

Statistically speaking......... The 1 is just as certain as the 300,000,000
Actually I was just kidding,,,
I got one ticket. If I win, you'll know by my improved newp threads!
My YouTube Channel
If I won....‘renman95 watch’ thread guaranteed. ;-)
If I win, I'll have someone else post for me.

Ok, I have the numbers just need to check my tickets.
The ....secret... is to buy 1000 tickets.
Cuts the odds and makes it very close to a sure thing.

I'll get on it in the morning.
Should I win, which is unlikely as I'm not going to buy a ticket, the changes in my life would probably be a net negative.
That kind of money is a tremendous burden. No matter what you think might happen, you'd instantly have all sorts of attention and new "friends".
The thrill of a new acquisition would be minimal.
A miser would suffer, a philanthropist would cherish the good that they could do with the windfall.
I agree. Nothing says that you couldn't donate most of it to charity or start your own foundation.
One could load up on dimes and be the next Rockefeller.
